International judges obviously know what they are doing but…
What’s so great about the idea? Does it really work gangbusters for the client. Isn’t it a bit shoehorned to fit? Many a twisted creative has dreamt of blowing something up…I can just see the what the chat was like after the briefing, now…
Will we ever see big ideas that work hard for the brand and get seen by more than 2 people?
You are a knob. Go away.
It’s been said before, but international judges don’t give a rat’s about effectiveness, how many people saw it, how big the client is, etc. This idea was clearly not a scam in the “let’s just spray-glue a few posters up” sense, so it’s no surprise they’re awarding it.
When you’re sitting in a room-full of average ideas and something like this pops up you’re quite likely to award it. It’s different than everything else.
So get over it my friend, and do something different yourself that gets noticed and maybe you’ll get a few paperweights for your desk next year.
scammyscamscam. What a joke.
I agree. 12:33
In fact, was there even a brief created for this idea???
And if so, where is the rest of the advertising to support this campaign?
11:06, should I call you the WAHbulance?
Big time knob.
It doesn’t matter that it’s scam, what matters is that it’s a truly shit idea.
So what if the courier company meets their deadlines, every other fucking courier meets there deadlines, and they don’t go round fucking up billboards in the process.
6.35 that is a truly lame comment.
Just because “insert client” delivers their promise we shouldn’t be doing ads about said promise??? Correct me if i’m wrong, but isn’t that what we do?? Make ads about what our clients actually do???
Go back to ad school.
5.09 If you spend your life waiting for the dream brief you will always be a junior.
6.35 You clearly have no place in advertising, creative, suit or otherwise. I’m pleased you will never get a job where I work.
most great ideas that get out there, this one included, are great because nobody was sitting around waiting for a brief from a client. it’s called being proactive. dicks.
At least they won an international award. What surprises me is we get some big gun international judges for AXIS to up the ante on local judging, and look what happens. The agency that wins most of the golds at AXIS has so far won only a bronze at the No Name Awards, while other agencies who won not a lot are the bigger winners at the big internationals.
What the hell happened to upping the judging ante at AXIS? Looks like we went more local than ever.
10;05. You are talking out of your arse. You obviously have an axe to grind with DDB or Toby or both. Let it go. He’s done a good job at DDB and he’s done a fucking outstanding job at Axis. In case you didn’t notice, that self-exploding billboard won Best in Show at Axis – that’s more than ‘not a lot’. As I recall, the doubters after the show were crying foul suggesting that the idea that deserved to win Best in Show was Speights Great Beer Delivery. Wouldn’t a Grande Clio and Gold One Show suggest that our overseas judges were right on the money? I think so. As for DDB, you are one of the few people on this blog who suggest that DDB didn’t deserve the awards they won on the night. The work was good. And judging by the fact that you have been keeping an eye on DDB’s awards tally suggests you have an agenda. Personally, I would say that having people of the calibre of Tractor and Seb Royce coming down here and talking to the industry and being at the show itself was upping the ante big time. You are alone in your bitter thoughts. Go away and wallow in your misery.
Yeah fuck off. What he said.
6.57 Get over your self, jesus christ the idea is arse, the explosion was crap, no one turned out to watch it, we all know they get shit there on time, point of difference please..
Perfect example of what’s crap about advertising today, it’s not smart , it’s a stupid fucking idea.
‘I know let’s blow up a billboard duuh’
DDB CBD BBD EEZ who cares! Their office still sucks the fat one.
I’m surprised they can make shit that folds in that lab facility.
Dream briefs?
You’re a dream brief, wearing your wife’s underwear you leather clad tail gunner.
Let us all move on from this limp roman candle.
Who cares what you think, who cares what I think.
Till the next random client pops up and gets on the news for a billboard in space, lets just bitch and moan a tad more so we can hate each other just a sprinkle more and smile at each other at public events and talk about how good you look in your mothers dress.
You all drink Faggs coffee.
So if I worked at Air New Zealand (and as it hapens I do but not dealing with Colenso) I’d be thinking “why aren’t they beating my door down with unsolicited award-winning ideas?”
I’m not going to bag the idea but would someone care to explain why its done well in interective awards?
I looked at the website when it was live and all I saw was a photo of the billboard updated every couple of minutes. It wasnt even a live web feed. Was this really a big interactive idea? These judges obiviously thought so. I havent seen the award entry video so who knows what kind of spin colenso may have put on the campaign.
From what I saw during the campaign I didnt see a big Interactive Idea . So has anyone outside of colenso seen the award entry video and if so is it on a link somewhere where joe public like myself can judge this according to what these judges saw.
If I worked at Colenso (which I don’t any more) I’d be telling Air New Zealand that because after the 10th unsolicited award winning idea that gets met with a vacant smile and a pat on the head you get a little bit disenchanted.
It was played at Axis 10:52. You should have been there.
10:52 This isn’t a blog for Joe Public.
Ok, so someone kindly sent me a link to the award entry video.
Sorry guys I’m just not convinced this is an big interactive idea and I’m sure it was never pitched to the client as such. A billboard that sparks and fizzels on que with a webcam pointing at it? WTF
If I’m missing the point or you just think i’m talking shite i’ll be on the corner of Hobson and Cook street on Tuesday the 27th at 9.23am where you can come kick me in the balls. I’ll be the one holding the big sign that reads – kick my balls. If you cant be there to kick me in the balls watch others kick me in the balls on a live webcam at http://www.kicking1052intheballs.co.nz.
Hopefully if http://www.kicking1052intheballs.co.nz is a success I’ll enter it in Axis next year and i might pick up an award for it. You never know stranger things have happened.
joe public would have also seen it on the news.
joe public wouldn’t bother with this bullshit
10:52, i’ll come kick you in the balls.
Only if I can hold limp roman candles and sparklers while my foot connects with your balls.
Then we can have a good shot at best in show next year and maybe even a Clio?
I think our entry should be called ‘exploding balls’.
What do you think?
Q: have you ever seen a billboard explode before?
A: no.
Q: have you ever seen a clever visual idea with a tiny logo in the corner?
A: yes. many times over.
Different & new things tend to get awarded as opposed to stuff we’ve seen a lot of.
It’s not a scam! I saw the credits had Brent Smart down as account director so rang him up to see if since he was into small businesses he’d like to handle the yellow pages ads for my lawn mowing round and he said he’d be right over. Mind you, that was nine hours ago. If someone sees this Brent Smart can you please get him to call me on 0800 MR MOWER? Thanks! Mr Mower.
@2:14 – yeah I’m cool with that as long as I’m listed at the top as ECD on the award entry credits.
Fantastic, I’m nearly set to go – I’ve arranged for the St John’s guys to be on stand by and I’ve got New Zealand’s second top web guy, Dan Three, to set up a dodgy webcam to cover the ball kicking extravaganza online.
Great, see you on the 27th at 9.23am.
I think you are envious of their success. It’s fucking sad.
You there Mr Smart?
Mr Mower
0800 MR MOWER
I’m watching this blog blow up live, right now.
I’m thinking of entering it in Award.
Mr Smart if you’re there – unless I hear from you soon I’m offering my business to that nice Mr O’Sullivan. He has promised me that he will print my yellow pages ad in a way that he can describe as a “world first” in the Cannes entry video. Whatever that is.
Call me, Mr Smart!
0800 MR MOWER
Come on this ad was lame and barely relevant to the brand. it was 2 guys fulfilling their dream of blowing something up.
the fact that it got an interactive award really made me sad. what a joke.
It just goes to show how lame and irrelevant advertising is these days in nz. just because it hasn’t been done before does mean it’s clever or a strong piece of communication. i tell ya, most of you ad wankers have your head buried right up your jacksie.
xx
mr digital
Nice one Paul. Funny, I was thinking about an old CD of mine just today who’d get irritated at creatives for doing pro-active work. He seemed to think this was compromising productivity. He say “good work…..look, don’t spend too much time on this, okay?” Utter fuckwit.
Fuck off mr digital.
