MITCHELL AND DYER LAUNCH PARTY TONIGHT
In just over a week in business, Mitchell and Dyer has done the impossible and become one of the fastest growing agencies in Auckland’s history. No doubt thanks to CBNZ blog exposure, they have been approached by art directors, television departments, post-production houses, international media, PR firms, marketing companies, suits, creative directors, and CEOs, all offering their support – and received high praise from industry stalwarts for nailing their attitude perfectly.
‘Advertising Agency seeks Secretary: Under 21, Photo required, No experience necessary’. Despite deterring efforts of several major publications and job-searching websites, dozens of applications and photos with proof of age are still pouring in daily for secretaries.
Dyer says: “Human rights violation? What about our human rights to have a hot young secretary?”
However, a billboard declaring “We’re here, we’re not queer – get used to it.” still sits gaily opposite Family Bar on K road fuelling public debate.
In just this one week, Alex Dyer and Colin Mitchell have downed ten-year-old scotch, toasted with elaborate cocktails, puffed cigars, shaken hands, exchanged business cards and shared long, long boozy lunches, and most importantly – signed contracts.
Mitchell and Dyer are on the verge of announcing their first client – it’s a biggie – watch this space.
To celebrate their launch and recent business success, Mitchell and Dyer are having a decadent party tonight (Wednesday) at one of Auckland’s finest destinations. If you’d like an exclusive invite or to cover this debauched event, please contact M&D at the address below for a cigar and to share a gin (or twelve.)
“We’re both gorgeous and hilarious – so whether it’s for a photo-spread, radio interview or a live television debate – you’ve got the photogenic, charismatic guys for the job,” says Mitchell.

Have a read of Hazel Phillips’ blog on the NBR site – Mitchell & Dyer is a complete fiction. Go to Level 27, PWC building – ain’t nobody home…It’s just a stunt for the launch of Mad Men on Prime TV, a DraftFCB client. So if the idea was to promote the show, it’s a shit one – who, outside of the industry, is going to be aware of it???
Hahahaha, oooooh busted.
It’s been a great three weeks of booze and good times. We’re surprised it lasted this long.
Thank you/apology party is still on. (come if you got invited)
Office definitely exists, writing from there right now.
Lots of love
Alex and Colin
Pity it’s a hoax. I’m visiting from the Campaign Brief Australia blog and I was just about to congratulating these boys on the best press release for a start-up/agency move/news story I’ve seen. Too bad it wasn’t real because it beats the pants of the pompous PR tosh trotted out on most of these occasions.
Great idea – loads of publicity, minimal budget. To the people who wondered what awards they’d done, who they were etc – you know about ’em now.
The NBR reporter wrote about career suicide etc – obviously the account service, CD and the client didn’t think so, that’s why they bought the idea.
Despite being pissed off at being duped, I have to say well done lads, genius idea.
Tom, your right. Its a shit stunt. Funny for these two idiots but after reading that NBR article Id say its a public relations headache for those fcb heads. Theirs no mention of what the name of the TV show is – does anyone know.
8.20 I think the career suicide thing was about the press release for the fake agency not what the guys actually did for the campane.
Now I get why you haven’t been calling me, Mr Mitchell (long ago given up on Mr Smart). First I have no luck with a real agency that does scam ads, now it’s a scam agency that maybe is a real ad!
What hasn’t changed is that the deadline for getting my ad in the Yellow Pages is fast approaching. Anyone else out there want to help me out?

Oh, my, god. 11.06pm – I pray to every god I know of that you aren’t a writer, art director or even a receptionist. No one is that illiterate, you have got to be a troll.
Nobody can take an opinion seriously with spelling and grammar like that 11:06. Perhaps you could learn how to write before passing comment on those that do so for a living?
This story/non story is still the most interesting thing to be put on this blog for ages (and the most commented upon). I think it’s all pretty hilarious, I can’t believe they got away with it for so long. Maybe Mitchell and Dyer have got themselves known enough now to actually start their own agency.
FCB? Is that Polish for scam? Pity they find it harder to do decent work for normal clients, like Robert Harris.
I’m sick of this one-off shit for rubbish TV shows no one watches. They go on about ‘campaignable thoughts’ bla bla bla. Well, where’s the big campaign idea for Prime? At least DDB came up with the ‘What would you be doing without Sky’ thought. (And no – I do not work at DDB, never have.)
Come on FCB, lets hear you!
Wow, 11:06.. if you’re going to insult people, at least learn how to spell. That was plain embarrassing and you look like the idiot here.
I think the idea was hilarious, but I’m let down it wasn’t a real agency. I would have loved to have worked for them.
Yeah DDB’s Sky stuff was way better. And no I don’t work at DDB either.
This kind of stuff has no impact on the public at large to promote the tv show. Total waste of time for everyone involved – except of course Colin and Alex who i’m sure had a really great time for a couple of weeks.
If I was in charge of budgets at fcb, I’d be questioning the wisdom of spending money on something like this with such little impact.
No need for an Apology Party.
When did creatives start apologising for good work?
Have a Hahaha Sucked In Fools Party.
Nice. Very nice.
oh come on 11.41. Of course you work at DDB, why else would you bother promoting the Sky line…its not exactly genius. You should try to mask your lies a little better.
Oh come on DDB. Give credit where credit is due rather than use it as an opportunity to discredit a bloody good idea.
Didn’t DDB do that stuff at Axis for The Breakup? You know, that scam with the ‘boyrfriends’ clothes being tossed out of a window that clearly the whole country saw and as a result ratings went through the roof?
12:41 – how can you trumpet DDB’s sky ideas when their current campaign consists of people saying ‘um’
i think we’ll all agree this idea is far, far, smarter.
On a personal level, Colin and Alex, i’d really appreciate it if you destroyed those provocative shots i sent in of myself for the secretary job
Rig
So they’ve sucked in the industry, and it’s a show about the industry, that people in the industry are likely to watch. Seems like a good idea to me.
Come on guys, I don’t think it really matters if a person can spell or not. The blogger’s expressing an opinion and that’s all that matters. It’s a little bit high handed to be judging someone’s “right” to comment or intelligence based on a few errors.
Do you want every single blog checked for spelling and grammar before it gets through?
Why don’t we wait to see what they do for the reveal before we get angsty about a lack of profile beyond the industry. A little jealous 11.41?
Are we sure NBR isn’t in on this? I’ve just seen a billboard revealing the whole thing this morning – seems a little too convenient to me.
On yeah, that oohs and aaahs work for Sky is brilliant. Especially as a billboard.
I agree 12.41, promoting the TV shows themselves for a free to air TV station that actually cares about ratings is a shit idea. On the other hand that ‘love the feeling’ TV2 stuff is bound to attract thousands of viewers.
We are liars.
We lied to family, friends, co-workers, colleagues, future employers and future employees.
Since the 12th of May, we have pretended to be misogynist, racist, homophobic alcoholics.
We lied to the CEO and most of the staff of Draftfcb – the agency that we still work for (hopefully).
We lied to ourselves by convincing each other that we liked cigars and scotch.
We requested only straight male art directors, expecting complaints; but instead we received dozens of applications.
We asked potential secretaries for photos and proof that they were under 21 – and horrifyingly, they obliged in hordes.
Our billboard opposite Auckland’s premiere gay bar declared “We’re here, we’re not queer – Get used to it.” and we got only admiring wolf whistles.
Oh yeah, that billboard was a lie too.
We expected to get chased out of town for being so horrifically politically incorrect.
Instead we got support from creatives, television departments, post-production houses, business mentors, international media, PR firms, marketing companies, suits, creative directors and CEOs, all offering their support.
We received dozens of books and were approached enthusiastically by magazines and newspapers.
We got offers from freelancers and we had freelance work offered to us.
If anyone is interested in whether their employees are looking to explore greener pastures, our email vault can be opened up for a price.
Bringing back the ‘glory days’ of advertising’? When ethics in the workplace, sexual harassment officers, smoke-free environments, equal opportunities and ethnic diversity are just figments of the imagination.
We were deliberately sexist, racist and homophobic and no one in the NZ public even batted an eyelid – it’s a comment on NZ society that maybe we haven’t changed as much as we thought. Or maybe everyone took the campaign with the irony it was intended.
The only way to see the golden age of advertising is by watching Mad Men, the Golden Globe award winning Drama about the advertising in the 60s, coming soon to Prime. And you think advertising lies now…
Unless, of course, you’re a client with a nice big budget. In which case, let’s do lunch.
We’ll bring the cigars, you bring the chequebook.

Good on you guys. I’m not sure that it’s one for the book – but it’s a solution I’d never of come up with if I was given the brief. Good sh*t.
You were even anti recycling. I noticed you only smoked about a 5th of your flashy cigars when you left the Paddy on Friday. I had a closer look to see if I could recycle them but you’d chewed the butts to death.
Great idea guys. You had me talking to other people about this and wanting to know more. I’ll be watching the show.
One hot summer’s day a Fox was strolling through an orchard till he came to a bunch of Grapes just ripening on a vine which had been trained over a lofty branch. “Just the thing to quench my thirst,” quoth he. Drawing back a few paces, he took a run and a jump, and just missed the bunch. Turning round again with a One, Two, Three, he jumped up, but with no greater success. Again and again he tried after the tempting morsel, but at last had to give it up, and walked away with his nose in the air, saying: “I am sure they are sour.”
If you really want to see bad writing, 11.06-bashers, take a look at the letter trying to convince us to fork over $1200 to send people on a copywriting course. Was the fact that it was terribly-written and full of mistakes actually the point? Or can this person not write?
dudes
this is 12.41 again. it would be hard for me to work at ddb when i’m not even in the industry…which is probably why i see things more objectively than most of you.
to the people who slammed the um/ah ad being run for sky at the moment, well i don’t really think that’s a fair comparison…true it is awful but it’s just a promotion…i’m talking about the big brand campaign…you know with the short white guy and fat black guy.
by the way, i did think what fcb was very funny. my point was more that one of the bosses there keeps going on about the big idea and strategy…yet he lets his staff trot out all this ineffectual, purely one-off stuff.
i wonder if you’d get away with this in the uk – i hear they see right through that kind of stuff. something along the lines of ‘easy to do good work for small clients…not so easy to do good work for big clients’.
Colin and Alex
get your asses back into work (at DraftFCB), or I’ll fire you for real.

I wasn’t impressed by the shot of the two gentlemen holding that bottle of Talisker.
When it comes to whisky, I’m a fan of Bruichladdich, especially the 17 year old.
Slightly more expensive than the rest, it’s well worth tracking down. That flash whisky shop in Elliot Street might have it, but I prefer ordering it from Whisky Galore in Christchurch. It’s on Colombo Street, over the road from a great Vietnamese restaurant. Reasonably priced, you have the option of eating at the same table as the owner’s children as they do their homework.
I prefer not to.
When ordering, I can vouch for the larb option. It’s quite outstanding. Lots of herbs. The place is BYO. A late harvest wine is what I would recommend.
After eating there you can go for a delightful walk into the city. Avoid Manchester Street, that’s where all the prostitutes are – well, all the ones that eventually end up separated into little bits on the banks of the Waimakariri.
The bars on Manchester Street are scary. My sister visited one of them a few years back. It was when that dreadlocked hippy from Granity stapled his bollocks to a cross and set his meat and three veg on fire.

You’re having a laugh. You’ve read the blogs here? You seriously think they are written by “those that [write] for a living?”
