Lynchy, thanks for putting the record straight.
According to NBR yesterday, Saatchi won “bragger’s rights”. Guess if you add up the shortlisted work, from a ‘rankings’ point of view they did come out top.
But isn’t that the real problem with these bloody rankings? They distort everything.
We all know who the big NZ winners were last week. Mojo and Clems. Silvers are very respectable so well done to DDB and Colenso on your haul, but Gold Lions are what really counts.
Bottom line is Mojo and Clems won braggers rights, not those with all their spin in the Strand.
Right 6.47, in the end it’s all about who actually won the quality metal, the strand mob don’t cut it. Well done Clems and Mojo!!!!
Who cares? The bragging from Saatchi and DDB is just about equivalent. But one definitely surpasses the other for ego and vanity and it’s not the Strand.
Clem’s and Mojo deserve an extra award for modesty and just bloody getting on with it.
NBR? Who’d take it seriously anyway? The ad-hoc column is becoming a Granny’s Shopping column equvialent better suited to Suburban Newspapers. It’s OBVIOUSLY light on anything meaty and they can barely fill it with anything decent. This week it even includes some Ogilvy spin-off being included as runner-up in the Ponsonby whatever. Right. Very global and important. Not even worth reading except for those who like seeing their name there.
To be honest, what bothers me down here, the reporting and discussion about the Lions is so superficial. It’s all fixated on two things:
-The NZ league table of which agency did better than other NZ agencies,
– How it translates into our placing against Australia.
Let’s face it, people, we are falling off the pace internationally and we’d all benefit a lot more by spending the time looking at the bigger picture. The things that might in fact help us grow and move forward as an industry such as:
– What international work won and why – so where’s the case studies on some of this stunning work?
-Where’s the discussion on some of the key global trends emerging, and the regions who are coming to the fore across all disciplines?
-What does it mean to us down here in NZ, and what can we learn from it all?
We are good down here, but we ain’t great – and perhaps if we could stop knocking each other all the time, we might actually learn something and move back to the top of the pile again.
By the way, for those who might want to take a poke at this post,
1. I am from the agency side of life in NZ
2. I was at Cannes for the Lions this year
3. I saw some work that took my breath away, and some that quite frankly was a waste of the entrant agencies dollars.
OK, let the bitching begin!
6:38, I don’t think the blog is the place to go into detail on all the seminars at Cannes. That’s why you pay $3000 to be a delegate. But now you brought it up, and you were there, perhaps you can enlighten us all on what were the ‘key global trends’ and the ‘regions coming to the fore across all disciplines’ this year.
Perhaps if you stopped obsessing over who beat who in the rankings and go out and get some new wins, learn a bit more about the clients and help grow their business we might be able to achieve what we’re supposed to.
Hi 5.44am (wow, you’re an early bird!), 6.38pm here.
To start with, I agree with your first point – what I was commenting on was the lack of industry media coverage on the issues I’ve mentioned.
There were a number of journos from Australian / NZ pubs at Cannes, so I’d have thought they would be preparing some deeper articles or features on this stuff.
Secondly, I am not even talking about the seminars, I’m talking about the big winners across all categories, and what that might be telling us down here about what’s happening / resonating around the world.
The overall results were pretty well covered by canneslions.com, surely the NZ Blog should focus on results for NZ and how we perform against our arch enemy Australia?
“… a number of journos from Australian / NZ pubs …”
Ha! Aint that the truth.
..arch enemy…. don’t you mean nemesis?
There was no journo from NZ despite Fairfax being the NZ rep for Cannes (where were they all week in Cannes?). The only media covering Cannes from an NZ perspective was the blog (and AdMedia from Auckland picking up stuff from the blog and the Cannes site).
Can someone please answer this: If I was relaxing at a restaurant/bar in Cannes during the festival, and I ordered a glass of dry white wine, a fine scotch (17 year-old), some salted crisps, and a selection of cheeses from the trolley, what would I be expecting to pay?
Thank God there was no journo from NZ. we’ve heard enough about the very little that happened at Cannes for at least another year. Any more would have b een completely insufferable.
