AXIS CALL FOR ENTRIES OPENS TODAY

The Call For Entries to the 29th Annual AXIS Awards opens today, Monday 1 December.
This year’s theme ties into our industry’s obsession with collecting at award shows. Everyone wants to walk away with everything. Always.
So, to feed the beast, DDB New Zealand have created a collectable series of 64 AXIS 09 Top Trump style stickers, each containing hard-hitting stats about the nation’s top creatives.
Aside from learning who has the worst Fashion Sense, the most Charm or the highest Lunchability score, the first person to Collect Them All will win a MacBook. Second place receives an iPhone.
High-profile industry figures have already lent their support (well, their photos at least) to a series of viral teaser spots, and demand for the stickers is already heating up.
Auckland’s finest ad eateries have also signed-up to help distribute stickers to patrons, and a website allows visitors to trade cards, create their own and even play online through a purpose built Facebook application.

Love it. Best call for entries campaign in years.
very, very good.
hmm, can anyone else recall pretty much the same trumps from the axis tables about four years ago?
Nice to see the return of ‘anonymous’, Lynchy. Now we can get back to slagging each other off good and proper.
But first, a question: is there some kind of court of arbitration I can go to, to dispute my appallingly low “suits crushed” score?
A perfectly egocentrical campaign.
Somebody copied an Axis Ad School idea from 2005, naughty naughty
The egos have landed.
It wasn’t even just a student idea. It got made and handed out at AXIS a few years back. I got a copy lying at home.
Who were the students? Can someone post the work? David? Paul? Any ideas?
This is such a blatant copy its not funny. I have one of the ‘original versions’ from 2005 at home and its almost exactly the same. You surely would have seen them at Axis? Its disappointing to see someone take credit for someone else’s talent…especially under the circumstances. If it does gain recognition, you’ll know that the credit for the idea doesn’t lie with your team.
The Movies are a direct copy of D and AD winning channel id from around 1996.
Lil and Matthias May, the guys that did the gingerbread haka.
Didn’t they call out someone else for copying student work?
Just saw it. Carbon copy. No wait, someone else was card number 1 in that set. Does that make this a different idea, yes?
Hey you could apologise to everyone at the legendary lunch this afternoon! Well, everyone, as in, everyone apart from the juniors who do the work. They’ll be back in the agency doing the work.
Will. Look at Karl Fleet’s movie. He talks about Dorritos in it. The people who did this obviously knew about it and are acknowledging it. As for this whole rip-off of student’s work, why don’t you put your pitch forks down a second and consider that maybe, just maybe, it was an honest mistake. Did the students have stickers that you put on a poster? Did they build a website where you could make your own top trumps? Doubt it.
Isn’t the whole campaign supposed to be a rip off and a piss take. The virals rip off the Doritos ads (Karl even says that in his one), and the Top Trumps cards rip off Top Trumps cards. I don’t think it’s pretending to be original as it’s clearly saying it’s a rip off.
It’s funny and easily the most talked about AXIS Call For Entries I’ve seen in a long while. Well done.
It was bound to happen. After being trotted out as an excuse for being cheesy, unfunny and generally shite, the subterfuge of ‘irony’ has now been used to excuse blatant plagiarism in an ad.
As for any craven use of irony, the fact remains that it can and mostly will be taken at face value.
No matter how arch or knowing the intent behind the work, if it isn’t borne out in the final product then it counts for nothing.
Irony exists purely for those with no guts to be honest about their efforts, or for those without the brains to come up with something genuinely cleve or interesting.
And not only that, but the whole argument seems to have been hastily marshalled directly in response to the first wave of comments – the lateness with which 7.51am posted his/her comment would tell you that.
It’s pathetic, convenient, and a bit weak coming from what is otherwise a very good agency (just in case you thought I was hating on DDB for the sake of it).
That’s all really.
So what exactly is the point in doing it? Its not a rip-off – its a direct copy..there’s nothing clever about redo-ing someone else’s work. I agree – it is clever…and the kudos should go to the people who thought of the idea, not the copycats. Honest mistake? Doubt it.
And who cares?
Yeah sure, the whole campaign is supposed to be a piss take……..
Didn’t the CD of DDB call out Karl for copying student work? Bit ironic isn’t it.
So, let me get this straight….
You guys used this as an excuse to attack someone for plagiarising, and all along you were plagiarising some student work.
bahahahahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahaahahaha
morons.
8:29, a piss take normally takes the piss and doesn’t just copy something else.
or was THAT amnesty work a piss take in your books too?
Oh great. Awards season. Can’t wait. Wake me when it’s over and we get back to the proper work.
Missed a good chance to do a simple clean idea based poster I reckon. Keep it classic and give yourself (and us) a break from these ideas that need explaining via award entry pleas or blog site defences. It’s unnecessarily convoluted. Or is it?
Well I like my card.
Here are some thoughts on the overseas jury concept:
Toby wrote last year that Kiwi campaigns like L&P do well in overseas competitions. In my experience the only juries with the confidence to award L&P are Australasian ones.
Take seven pencils at AWARD last year versus eight finalists but no metal at Axis as evidence. Obviously the Oz and Kiwi judges got it, but the Axis international jury probably didn’t.
There are a ton of ad competitions where Kiwi agencies can have their work judged by top overseas juries, but AWARD and Axis are the only ones where NZ colloquial has a shot.
Saying that, I do like the idea of an ‘independent’ jury. It sounds like it’s too late for this Axis, but how about including at least one ‘Kiwi expat’ like McCracken or Maddocks in future? They’ll be able to explain any local nuances, and give our New Zild stuff a chance.

Speaking of taking the piss…has anyone heard about the team of petty crims ripping of the entire stock of cards at a couple of restautants so they could claim the prizes first?
I think the Axis jury liked L&P when it was first done. And it was rewarded with some good metal. Hasn’t really changed much since.
