The 2009 Grande Orca for the TRB’s best radio campaign of the year has been won by Colenso BBDO for their series of spots for TV3 ‘Outrageous Fortune’.
The spots were written by Karl Fleet and then temp team Ashwin Gopal and Tim Yates, who somehow will have to work out who gets the trip for two to Cannes. The spots will also be entered by TRB into the Radio Lions.
The People’s Choice was won by DraftFCB – creatives Rory McKechnie and Smeta Chhotu-Patel share the $1000 cash prize.
The winning spots can be seen at www.trb.co.nz

I vote Karl gives the juniors the trip.
Those guys are now at BCG, someone should offer them a proper job.
Of course Karl will give them the trip.
Give the trip to Rory
Give it to Tim and Ashwin – it’ll make a lovely honeymoon.
Shouldn’t the trip we taken by the originators?
Oh actually for fuck’s sake, what does it mean they were written by Karl and then by the team? What does that mean? Karl?
Karl shouldn’t have even been up there. It wasn’t his idea. He was just doing his job as a ‘CD’ and over-seeing a junior team. That doesn’t make it your idea, Karl.
There’s no question who should get the trip.
Who cares about who, the spot was better than last years grand orca. But maybe not as good as the comedy fest stuff.
anyone know why that didn’t win?
1.54, you night owl, you’ve misread the original post. (Understandably, granted.)
What the writer intended to say was, “written by Karl Fleet and the then temp team Ashwin Gopal and Tim Yates.
He could also have tried:
“written by Karl Fleet and temp creative team Ashwin Gopal and Tim Yates.”
The bigger issue, surely, is that the overall standard of ORCA-winning ads was so low this year. Why?
This spot shouldn’t have won and we all know it. “Offensive” is by far the best spot of the year. For a panel of university lecturers (sorry, not you Catmur, although i hope your vote wasn’t for this) to have decided on who gets to go to Cannes is a joke.
But enjoy yourselves Tim and Ashwin. Cannes is great. Maybe you can can pick up Josh and Jamie’s radio lion while you’re there. It’ll probably be gold.
The 1st place winning ads are pretty average.
A running description of everything that happens in the show. Wow.
If you watch the show before, this ad just explains what everyone already knows and has experienced.
Rubbish.
The most offensive thing about Offensive is that it followed exactly the same formula as 90% of “creative” radio ads agencies crank out these days. The second most offensive thing is that it hardly played. Not that that mattered, since it wasn’t created with the client’s interest in mind, only the agency’s.
TRB give out an ORCA trophy each month. They then re-run your winning ad within their ad to sell the ‘power’ of radio advertising. There is no way they can repackage Offensive as a TRB ad so it was never really going to win. Plain and simple.
Look at who the judges were. Sorry but someone has to say it. When was the last time ANY of them wrote a half good radio ad? Joke. Get someone good from out of town to do it. The one good thing that came out of it is that J&J’s radio ad didn’t win. Funny ad but a big scam.
Hardly played? So it did play. There’s goes that argument. what are wanting to award here, the most run ad?
And ‘power’ of radio advertising on behalf of the TRB? So it was ousted for political reasons? Not good enough.
You’ve got to go for the best idea. Haven’t you?
Great watching
Hey Karl, can I have the extra Cannes ticket?
Who was the judge 2.41?
The same guys judge it every year.
They’ve repackaged a sweary ad before – they just played the congrats bits without the ad and made some joke about it.
Yeah – offensive was awesome and everybody thought so except the judges and all the people who voted for other ads in the peoples choice.
