Philip Kelly’s entry in London’s Anti-Design Festival on display in the streets of Auckland

This month, you can catch some of NevilleBrody’s Anti-Design Festival (ADF) in downtown Auckland. The ADF gathered contributions of art and design that attempt to unlock creative fires and ideas, exploring spaces hitherto deemed out-of-bounds by a purely commercial criteria. Newly returned NewZealander Philip Kelly, in conjunction with the ADF, has erected threetext/type billboards included in the festival in London. The billboards (onSymonds Street, Pitt Street and New North Road, consist of original text andtypography drawn by the designer that engage with the nature of language,visual communications, and the media infused urban landscape.

Kelly’s work in visual communicationsencompasses art direction, graphic design, typography and photography with hisoriginal type and art direction appearing in Rolling Stone Magazine, PaperMagazine, Big Magazine, and the Graphis Design Annuals. His work has beenrecognized with Cannes Lion, Clios, and Gold Pencil at the One Show. After over a decade in New York andShanghai he’s returned to Auckland.

The Anti Design Festival isorganised by acclaimed designer and head of the Royal College of Art, NevilleBrody, in conjunction with his design studio, Research Studios and will runfrom 18-26 September on and around Redchurch Street in Shoreditch, London. Thefestival will incorporate exhibitions, installations, workshops,performances and talks in Art, Design, Product, Film, Sound, Fashion,Performance, Print and Interactive.
