WINTER

Sundance-winning film Winter’s Bone opens this week at Rialto Cinemasin Newmarket, Christchurch and Dunedin, and at Event Cinema in QueenStreet, presented by Curious.

The film won Best Picture (GrandJury Prize) and Best Screenplay at Sundance this year, and Variety hasdescribed it as “raw but utterly enveloping… the atmosphere ofsuspicion, foreboding and everyday misery would be too much to bear ifnot for the rich emotional anchor supplied by actress JenniferLawrence.”

Set in the harsh backwoods of Missouri, 17-year-old Ree sets out to find her crystal-meth-cooking father when he puts up the family home for bail. Her determination to uncover the truth behind her father’s disappearance is inseparable from her instincts to save her siblings from the expectations of their impoverished, drug-addled kin.

Winter’s Bone screened at this year’s NZ International Film Festival in July, before its cinema launch on 28 October, and it’s distributed in New Zealand and Australia by Curious.
