UNICEF urges New Zealanders to ‘say no to naff’ this Christmas with a Facebook-led campaign
Are socks, soaps and satin boxers not at the top of your Christmas list? UNICEF New Zealand thought as much, and are giving New Zealanders a chance to ‘Say No to Naff’ ‘ with a new Facebook-driven campaign via DraftFCB, Auckland.
The campaign aims to reduce the amount of naff and unwanted Christmas gifts that New Zealanders give and receive every year. A 30-second spot on the site suggests alternatives to useless presents.
UNICEF has flipped the usual model of directing communications at the buyer, and are targeting the recipient instead. When the recipient says no to naff, the buyers have permission to give gifts from UNICEF without any potential disappointment or awkwardness.
“Say No To Naff is about helping Kiwis who are stuck for a gift idea and revert to a naff gift because they don’t know what to buy,” says Dennis McKinlay, UNICEF New Zealand executive director.
There’s even a knitted billboard going up in the Auckland CBD at the start of December, so be on the look out for that.

That’s bananas.
Definitely gets a ‘like’ from me.
Great insight. Appropriate (and I imagine successful) use of social media. Nice one.
Thought I had seen something similar before…a few years ago Oxfam ran ‘Don’t buy crap this Christmas’…..
