Colenso BBDO Auckland leads the agency pack at shortlist stage of CAANZ 2016 Effies Awards
The biggest night on the New Zealand advertising industry calendar is fast approaching, with finalists in the 2016 NZ Effie Awards announced today.
Colenso BBDO Auckland heads the agency pack with 28 finalists followed by FCB with 16, DDB with 11 and True with nine.
Organised by the Communication Agencies Association of New Zealand (CAANZ) with key partner TVNZ, the 2016 NZ Effie Awards will be presented at a glittering ceremony at The Langham, Auckland on October 20.
An Effie Award is recognised globally by advertisers and agencies as the industry’s pre-eminent award and represents the pinnacle in marketing effectiveness. The Effie programme is held in 40 countries and has been run in New Zealand for 15 years.
The theme for the 2016 Effies is ‘Showcase your science’ – recognising that great creative thinking prospers from strong strategic foundations.
Says Simon Lendrum, CAANZ immediate-past president and managing director of J. Walter Thompson NZ: “A well planned campaign has clarity of purpose, insight-rich consumer understanding, defined success metrics and smart media thinking. Great science gives art a chance to succeed. The Effies are our opportunity to share our science, and demonstrate to New Zealand business that there is method to effective communications.”
A panel of 150 expert industry judges in Auckland and Wellington assessed entries from around the country to select 102 finalists across 17 categories. Judging to determine the Bronze, Silver and Gold Effie winners in each category will take place on September 29, carried out by a further 77 judges. Selections will also be made for the paper that deserves title of ‘The Hardest Challenge’.
All Gold Effie category winners will also be eligible for the Grand Effie, which is awarded to the campaign that achieved the most extraordinary commercial result for its client. The winner will also receive $100,000 in TVNZ airtime, thanks to sponsor TVNZ.
This year’s executive judging panel includes internationally renowned strategic planner, Merry Baskin, from the UK. Founder of Baskin Shark, a brand consultancy focusing on brand strategy and communications development, Merry has won several US Effie awards and judged the European Effies. While in New Zealand, she will be speaking at The Annual Effectiveness Function in association with TVNZ, on October 18th at AUT and presenting a half day “wisdom- workshop” in Auckland on October 13.
