AdFest is on my radar now. You get to go to Asia and beat up Gary Glitter.Axis…snigger. Can someone please pass me the spray glue and the A3 printout, I need to enter a few categories.
If you’re under 30 (which I’m not) Young guns would obviously slot in between Clio and Award, maybe even equal with Clio. It’s entrants are global so there’s far more competition. It doesn’t count in CB rankings but I don’t think that means it’s not a great show.
I agree with the above comment about D&AD being biased – but disagree with the Merry down comment. It was in the design/illustration section if I remember correctly and was pretty damn fresh.
Sure, certain awards hold more prestige than others and everyone in the industry knows the relative pecking order. But I for one can never remember who won what with what.Great ads are great ads and the same goes for creatives.
Can someone please explain to me why every time awards are discussed, there’s always a couple of cocks who bitch about AXIS.Seems to me that as New Zealand’s premiere creative award it should get a little more local respect. If they have such little regard for it, I’d like to see them boycott the show… oh, that’s right, non-finalists usually do anyway.
Like it or not, your career relies on Axis. Even our most talented creatives struggle to win on an international basis every year. How many local TVCs have made it to the international awards level in the last ten years? Not many. So without those Highly Commended and Bronze certificates from Axis most of you wouldn’t have an awards section in those CVs.

what about young guns?
I’d put Ellerslie above Axis. They’re tougher on scams.
What about the NINFA Awards?
Don’t forget the South Island ad awards.

D&AD is easily the best show in the world. The work that gets in every year is always fresh. One Show not so much IMO.
Young Guns is prestigious if you’re under 30. If the work’s good, it will end up in one of the majors.
The ‘Fair Go best and worst’ tops my Auntie Ivy’s list.
As Catmur once said – Young Guns is a handicap for those not good enough to play with the big boys.
bollocks, D&AD is an overrated lottery judged by biased poms. Merry down?? what the fuck is that about?

D&AD is fresh out of ideas but they look pretty
Catmur’s a one trick pony, what would he know.
What would you know, dickhead?
if catmur doesn’t rate young guns why did they enter superman in it last year after it had already won a D&AD pencil?
The more places it’s seen, the more people think it’s a real ad.

Have to say I agree with the one trick pony comment. DDB’s reel is virtually just the same ad over and over.
In what way? If it is the same it should be no trouble for you to point it out.
I agree, that Superman is exactly the same as the one they did with the lion coming home from a rooting in africa. Shame on you Hywill.
What DDB do they do well, but there is a familiar, postmodern Python, quirkyness to a lot of the output.

looks like catmur’s opinion of young guns won’t have gone up this year.
Does anyone rate bronze or HC?
A gong’s a gong. Take it and say thank you.
HC and bronze can’t really be snivelled as if you look at Award just gone Saatchi came second and that’s all they got!
