Well done DDB / NZ Girl.2. The news media?-OK, gotcha, BUT what take-out do the journos / editors get from it? Firstly that agencies do dangerous stunts that go wrong? Then when the ‘reveal’ occurs, ‘Fucking agencies winding us up with stupid time-wasting lies, scandal and innuendo’ 3. I was almost sucked in that it could be genuine, until I realised that the helicopter sound you can hear is the sound of a Bell 206 Jetranger – but the helicopter pictured is an AS350 Squirrel. The two types of chopper have very very different sounds. A punter (and obviously adland-ers) wouldn’t tell the difference but to a self-confessed plane spotter it gives the game away instantly. Details people, details!

a couple of casual observations:1) If it is shown to be a hoax, then is the guy/girl who writes Adlib for the Independent going to feel like a right plonker?2) If what ‘anonymous’ says above about the major traffic spikes after each of the last two stunts is correct, then I imagine the same is happening here. Surely that’s the aim of the campaign… awareness = traffic = $$$3) The comment by another ‘anonymous’ about the previous campaigns taking in a ‘few judges’ is plain ludicrous. Now I know that some in this industry only got involved because they couldn’t apply themselves in more professional areas, but I for one believe the esteemed judges at Cannes know their stuff, and that NZGirl was the only campaign in Australasia to win a Gold Lion last year says enough for me.4) I can’t believe I’ve just spent five minutes ranting about a subject I couldn’t give a shit about. Oh yes… that’s why… because quite frankly, this industry is full of wankers who are so far up their own arses that they can’t see good work for what it is unless they are somehow able to take the credit for it.There – end of story.

From my understanding this little stunt has driven a huge amount of traffic to nzgirl, surely this makes it a very good ad indeed. We all know it’s fake (and thanks to that planespotter we have proof) but that isn’t the point. It was a hugely innovative way of advertising, that worked. what i cant get over is that so many of you have to do creative work for clients that never let you do anything and here some of are bitching about a client who was prepared to do something that’s never been done before. i say good on them for giving something a crack and being brave. all creatives who’ve bagged this purely because they’re jealous of how many awards they’ve won in the past, really need to move on from that and get back to thinking about how nice it would be if all clients would not water down our ideas and let us have a go at real creative thinking in our work. more of us would go to cannes if they did (which means more chances of bagging hot french chicks).

i just got an email from a friend saying, “You girls heard about this? I read in the independent that they kidnapped some girl’s cheating boyfriend, stripped him naked, then dangled him from a helicopter over the Big Day Out. Another plane was supposed to fly over after the stunt saying ‘Don’t mess with NZgirls’, only the stunt went horribly wrong. Once the guy was a fair few metres off the ground, he struggled and fell out of the harness. He was rushed to hospital with minor cuts and bruises, and law suits brewing.” and had two attachments, 1 of the civil phone caall thing and 1 of the supposed accident. she’d sent it to about 30 of us, so its definitely getting around.
