Is there too much of a similarity between these two ideas for the same client, Amnesty International, in different parts of the world? The version that was first off the blocks (pictured top) was created last year by Aussie expat creative team Samira Ansara and Amy Hollier (with Tony Granger and Sarah Barclay) at Saatchi & Saatchi Paris, the other more recently by Publicis Mojo, Auckland…

I love it how they said they attached this in books so they can now enter the press section of Cannes as well as the direct section. Ever tried to hold a magazine with a pen inside it? Stoopid.

Whether it’s a stolen idea or not, attaching a pen to a magazine is ridiculous both conceptually and logistically. At least the other one works as a genuine DM piece.

Ahh, the old creative-bash, been a while folks, been a while. Can anyone actually link how Party B would have seen the work of Party A? I’m all for calling out a rip-off, especially on a repeat offender, but before you sharpen up the pitchforks and get out the dunking chair can we at least hold a little mock trial, lest we one day be judged in a similar manner for an innocent act.

The Saatchis work is for the whole world to see on the Cannes Lion website. It received a Finalist at Cannes last year.

Interesting to see the same device used for DM and press. Quite possibly the ideas were done independently.In the Saatchis execution the pen is a value-add, injecting something extra to the message of ‘just pick up the pen.’In the press ad it’s more like a cute device to make a conceptual connection between the idea of writing and freeing prisoners.Be interesting to know which one generated more action on behalf of the prisoners.My money’s on Saatchis.

The mojo amnesty Pen first ran as DM piece and sold for a donation during freedom week in July 2007, it was part of a week long campaign which raised 30% more money then the previous years appeal. The client brought the idea at the end of 2006. Over 5,000 pens were made (not just a one off for a photo) and took four months to make. It was going to enter in Cannes last year (the same time as the Paris one) but wasn’t going to run until July falling outside the Cannes dates. So It was held back not to break the rules, even thou the pens were made and sitting ready to go. It was legal for the next round of shows. They will be going up against each other at D&AD, Oneshow and Clio. So i guess they will both be knocked out. Karl
