That’s what happens when creatives spend too much time on the internet.
Searching for ideas online, not in life. The nerds have taken over advertising.
Friday lunch anyone? Can’t afford it eh?
this old tired argument. Why is it embarrassing? They didn’t rip off another ad, they took an idea and had their own idea of using it to create and ad.
The same way schweppes ad from oz was copied from a japanese short film and won gold at canne. So what?
Yet another case of creative thievery, and not done very well either.
Having said that, it’s gotta be tough pitching anything actually new to a client like that.
Shame on you. Not only can you not think up an original idea, you cant even change sets. it’s the same one the lion’s filmed in for ‘clever toys.’
Still, bodes well for the rest of us, how many clients will be willing to stay with an agency that puts out this shit?
Wouldn’t be so bad if the Telecom spot improved on the original, but it didn’t. At least the NY spot looks and sounds cool, the people are believable and have some genuine attitude, and the company’s real. The Saatchi’s spot screams lame from the first bar of bad lip sync. Very sad.
Give the guys a break. Wasting time on finding a proper idea for their biggest client would’ve meant less time to spend on Power House energy drinks.
On a serious note, this is a new low point for what used to be a respected creative agency. Let rip bloggers. They deserve everything you throw at them. Better still, win Telecom off them with a decent idea. There’s never been a better time.
9 out of 10 comments here are from DDB. Anything to shift the debate away from their scam scandal. Pretty desperate for new business too if they’re trying to knock off Telecom by using the blog. There’s an all-time low point for you.
Oh yawn. There’s a hundred of these lip sync things on the net. But only one ad.
It’s a genre, guys, and Telecom have grabbed it first.
Shame their phones are so awful. I quite like the ad.
What they should’ve done was use a real Telecom department with Telecom managment dancing around, singing and looking cool. But then just as they’re about to all high 5, a random dude walks in with an AK47 and wets the lot of them. That would be awesome.
I like it. Sure it’s ripped off something else, but isn’t everything? As long as it’s not ripped from an ad I’m cool. And while I’m at it, what was wrong with the card in the previous post? It’s was a cool idea, am I missing something, or are we just all haters on here?
2:09 That WAS the idea. The client really loved the bit about the gun gag at the end but suggested that instead of all getting shot they could just be dancing and singing instead. I agree with them, and the idea isn’t lost.
1.18: i don’t work at DDB, but I feel the need to defend them here.
You can’t possibly back up what you’re saying about a scam scandal at DDB. I admire some of the stuff toby and his team have done for Pink Batts, Sky TV, Lotto and the like. Not all of it, but most of it. These are tough mainstream clients and the ads are pretty bloody good.
You’re throwing Andrew Stones in glass houses mate. Like a lot of Kiwis in the industry here I have been on to the Cannes Lions site and have noted the fact that Saatchi won their Silver Lion for an energy drink I personally have never heard of with print ads I personally have never seen. Then there are clients like Rodney Council and WWF in there too. Not Telecom. Not DB. Apart from a screen saver for Toyota I didn’t see any big clients represented.
By contrast, if you see what DDB picked up for, it was a TV ad that we’ve all seen for a finance deal for Volkswagen. A nice ad for a tough brief. And the other Silver Lions were for Sky TV. Big clients.
And as for your comment about DDB using the blog to go after Telecom, it’s tragic and more than a little paranoid. As long as Saatchi keep doing unoriginal work like this, DDB won’t have to go after Telecom. It will come to them.
The recurring lead chick in this spot is pretty bloody hot. Especially at the end when she’s looking me straight in the eye and bobbing all over the place.
Hmmm, interesting 9.46, I seem to remember Saatchi winning a lion for DB and two for TVNZ, one of their biggest clients. Congrats to DDB and Saatchi for their success at Cannes.
I like the really good billboard DDB has done for Sky on Bond Street in Kingsland. I lost count at 50 words.
Which makes me think, how much of the work DDB does for Sky is ‘agency’ sponsored as opposed for paid for.
The work for Sky is getting tired, the work used to be much better.
Speaking of best work; Cadbury.
We all know that Cadbury in NZ is a pig of a client. So well done to Fallon London for making the Cadbury Marketing department love advertising again. Fallon’s have done a fantastic job helping out DDB.
DDB spends $250,000 on awards every year. I might be wrong. Can someone please correct me.
Anyone else pitching for Pizza Hut?
There’ll be one less ‘big’ agency in town by the end of the year.
So in response to Telecom’s pretty significant problems S&S launch this bizarre hackneyed piece of crap. I’d love to know what Paul Reynolds thinks about it.
10.46 – I hear the spend is more like $200k and the three auld mugs aren’t happy about it either. Specially as all it produced was a whole new line in scam.
10.46, You think you have your ear to your ground when it comes to award budgets at DDB. Sadly, you just have your head up your arse.
It’s common knowledge at DDB – even in their media company in the building – that while two of the ‘auld mugs’ aren’t too happy entering any creative awards (they’re beanies, what do you expect) the one ‘auld mug’ with all the clout who lives in Sydney, is pretty bloody stoked with winning awards, whatever the cost.
As for Sky losing it, I pissed myself tonight when I saw that new MySky ‘Ants’ ad. Fucking funny. Compared to the old Middleditch big guy/small guy stuff, it’s way, way fresher.
I liked the Sky ants ad more when Mel Smith and Griff Rhys-Jones did it in the 1980s. Mind you, it didn’t take 5 days to shoot, so at least the new DDB one fed more families. Crapper of a time to be launching a product like that though!
Hey hey hey…. remember at the end of the day… all you are doing is selling other people’s shit. Making other people money. Copy away I say. If they make a buck out of it, GREAT!

How completely and utterly embarrassing.
You’re a pack of thieves.
Busted.

It is NOT a rip off.
In no way, shape or form is it anything like NZ girl.

sad days indeed
Appalling dinosaur agency rip-off. Give Telecom whatever they paid for this back.

Boo.
Awful.
Badness.

I don’t mind the ad itself, but what kind of rubbish interactive is: telecomad.co.nz. 3, 4,5 years ago, S&S was doing amazing interactive.
saatchis ripped off a famous viral and put it on tv? hilarious.
Oh yawn. There’s a hundred of these lip sync things on the net. But only one ad.

lol, this may help Hulk justify losing some more head count. Watch this space…
Wonder if Connected Venture have a good intellectual property case on their hands?
So this is how it ends.

this spot is an abhorrent stain on an agency that used to be good.
and no i don’t work at DDB

Something is wrong deep in the heart of Saatchi’s if they think this crap is any good.
Well, my wife and kids like the spot …
Gosh a lot of people here don’t work for DDB.
What’s the core idea of this ad?
10.46 – I hear the spend is more like $200k and the three auld mugs aren’t happy about it either. Specially as all it produced was a whole new line in scam.
