AWARD JURIES ANNOUNCED – DROGA5’S DAVID NOBAY NAMED CHAIRMAN OF JUDGES
AWARD has announced its salubrious line-up of judges, and their Chairman David Nobay, creative partner at Droga5 Australia.
Atotal of 80 judges from Asia, New Zealand and Australia have beenappointed for the coveted role of selecting the finalists and winnersfrom the AWARD Call for Entry 2008 (work appearing 9th July 2007 – 15thJuly 2008). David Nobay, Creative Chairman of Droga5 in Sydney has beenappointed the Chairman of Judges by the AWARD Committee.
“It seemsa bit rhetorical to say this appointment is an honour, but frankly itis. The committee has pulled together quite a line-up of talent, and tobe asked to direct them (if only from the shadows) is a fascinating, ifintimidating, opportunity,” says Nobay.
Judges are spread over 9panels, each having its own individual Chairman from the AWARDCommittee. Finalists will be released in October, and the winners willbe heralded at the AWARD Awards Presentation Evening on ThursdayNovember 27th at The Overseas Passanger Terminal, Sydney.
Judges,AWARD Members and extended industry will celebrate together at theKODAK AWARD New Director of The Year & AWARD Judges cocktail partyon Wednesday September 17th at BLUE Sydney Hotel.
AWARD Managementare currently processing the thousands of entries, and will release theofficial entry tally across all categories in the coming weeks.

Why haven’t Saatchis NZ got two on the direct panel?
Hey that’s just excellent – four chicks snuck into boys game!! Huge ups to the industry for not insisting on gender testing. Hmm… I was a little worried names like melanie and rebecca might have raised suspicion.
Good to see some of the usual old hacksand faces missing from the list.

M&C Saatchi Sydney are apparently entering their radio spot for Sydney Dogs and Cats home. If you want to give it an award then by all means do.
Just one thing though, as the press release states
“The writers….claim the ad contains an ultrasonic frequency (at 20,000Hz) mixed under the voiceover, which is a sound that humans can’t hear but dogs can. They claim that when dogs hear the ad, they react by barking or whining.”
Like I said, if you wish to award it go ahead. The reason I’m posting this is because I think it will be a not uninteresting litmus test of our industry.

I can think of one ECD who’s not on the list. Maybe he’s done so much ego-stroking, self-publicity over the last year we’re just pleased to see it didn’t work for this selection panel.
Awards are not all about you and your agency 11.25. They’re for the industry. And who’s doing the best work in NZ right now is debateable. Can’t think of one we all regard as leading the pack. Maybe Nick W and he’s on the list anyway.

Let’s be honest, every farkin’ agency in NZ produces free ads for some of their smaller clients from time to time (Saatchi, Colenso, DDB, TBWA, Mojo, the lot). As long as they run the ads somewhere using paid-for media and the client has approved the ads, who gives a shit. It’s the big ads that make the agencies famous, not the freebies. Everyone knows that.
