Just when we thought we’d seen the last of the ego’s for five minutes,
here comes THE WORK. When do CD’s ever do their work?
The unrelenting chase for glory and profile must cost the major agencies
a small fooking fortune. Or maybe next year’s profit. Hope it’s worth it for
the one or two miserable bronzes or silvers won at Cannes.
For gods sake get some help.
Maybe try my ma’s advice. If at first you don’t succeed, try again, and again, and again if you have to.
And if you’re really that over it, get out of the game and free up some salary for someone who still cares.

That’s a great point 9:51. What happened to pitching and chasing business – all part of the modern ECD’s skill set. That’s not to mention managing and mentoring staff. It’s this that keeps people employed, paying the rent/mortgages rather than chasing another bit of metal. Or am I being too old fashioned?
yeah – completely agree with 11:36pm; 9:51pm sounds a bit deluded and sour… this is the game, and you have to play it, otherwise you’ll drop out of public eye…
It doesn’t look like 9.51 was saying they don’t care 11.36, so maybe get off your high horse.
I DO think the point about the endless merrygoround of awards is well made. It’s been non-stop since the start of the year. Axis, Cannes, AWARD etc. Plenty of us are here to do great work for our clients, not just for awards. Awards are what we get for doing great work for our clients, right? We don’t do work just to win awards do we? Or do we?
“This is the game and you have to play it.”
Just possibly the most honest words ever uttered on the blog, 12.45. That simple.
Jeez 11.36. Someone touch a raw nerve did they?
Saatchi, show me metal for paid and briefed work for Toyota, Telecom and Westpac. DDB.. AMI, Warehouse, McDonalds, Colenso…. Air New Zealand and Farmers.
Sorry 10.54, but where’s the real metal for Maccas, The Warehouse and AMI. This year… not 10 years ago. And Colenso have won a hell of a lot more real metal than just Air New Zealand and Farmers.
Y’all are such hard-arse gangsters you should have a fight about it like the Killer Bees or the Bloods & Cripps or the Sharks and Jets and sort it out once and for all.
We open on a bunch of thin, white twenty-something males in designer tees walking across the expansive green of Myers Park. Some are weilding Sharpies, others hold Artlines and one heavyweight has a vivid red Pantone marker.
Another gang have congregated around a leather-jacketed, goatee wearing man with a shaved head who sits on the playground equipment. One of the gang, lanky with his pants halfway down his ares, holds a can of repositionable 77 and crumpled plastic bag. Another is crouching down, he pulls a trusty old HB from his sock. It’s a nice sock, clean white with clear branding. Old school. Another reaches inside his Olive Drab M65 jacket…
Shit is obviously about to turn real bad.
It’s already bucketloads better than Mad Men, that show sucks.
I think we could cast Eric Bana in it, that man is a legend.
1054 here. I meant to lump Colenso and DDB in the same, um, lump as Saatchis, not contrast them. Glad I’m not a copywriter. And what’s the real metal for Colenso? Got to say it’s looking like previous EVD’s legacy (= this year’s metal haul) not as much as you’d expect.
I agree with 11:36 – the people who win these awards have a real passion and commitment to the industry we’re in. And they work hard at it.
Winning awards isn’t a new thing, unfortunately rubbishing them on the blog is.
Whatever happened to the time-honoured tradition of celebrating success?
the have a real passion and commitment to themselves mainly though eh?
I agree with 4.38. The real passion and commitment is to themselves and their own ranking. Or they wouldn’t have to channel so much time, passion and commitment to producing scam twould they? I do however agree they must work hard to produce so much scam.
By the way 2.30, there is no time-honoured tradition for celebrating scam except in the agency who produced it. Giant slaps on the back all round – to themselves. But that’s a bit of an own goal isn’t it?
I find it funny you comment on the ‘recent merry-go-round’ of awards 1:36. All those shows (AXIS, AWARD, Cannes) have been around longer than most people in the industry and it’s like this the same time every year. Cannes is even in it’s 55th year or something. Nothing new here except maybe you?
