Congrats Iain and Ordy, well done mates.
I can’t believe a type crafter picked that horrible jumble of ordinary typefaces. It’s not 1994 anymore.
Oh well, I suppose this will soften the blow of draftfcb’s Wellington office being closed down…
Lovely art direction, but completely destroyed by weak writing, and a clumsy argument.
– Who says foreign films are highly praised? Most people I speak to think foreign films are rubbish, and foreign films tend to get savaged by critics too. It’s an ambiguous start, but at least you’ve defined your subject.
– Oh dear. “Bad flicks” don’t make more money – “popular” films do. You may have thought the new Star Wars films were “bad” but millions of people, whose opinions are just as valid as yours, thought they were “good”. You need to Google subjectivity, and find out what it means.
– Once you’ve finished that, type in “avante garde”. That’s right, it’s actually “avant garde”. Typos happen, but this is just laziness and ignorance. How can the reader be expected to respect The NZ Listener’s views on foreign films, and international appeal, when it can’t even be bothered to spell basic foreign terms correctly? Well done judges. I think you should enter this at Cannes , you know, for a laugh.

Finally, we do get romantic comedies from Prague. Your ignorance on the subject in embarrassing. Seriously, if you’re going to write ads urging people to “think”, would it hurt to do a bit more of it yourself?
Bad ads happen all the time, but they shouldn’t be given awards. Especially when the CD of the company that submitted the ad is judging the competition.
andrew – stop taking things, and yourself, so fucking seriously.
You must be a right laugh to be around Andrew
come on mate, post up one of your press ads – better still, one that displays the level of perfection you champion so vigorously above
bet you won’t, you sad, sad little man.
While Andrew may be pedantic; pernickety even, he is correct on all points.
Thing is though Andrew, some people would argue for no commas after an ‘and’ and no starting sentences with especially. Sarcasm is a debatable form or critique as well.
So give yourself a whack on the arse. I’m sure you’ll like it. You know it.
And if anyone ever wanted a definition of “pissing on someone’s parade”, Andrew’s little diatribe there would be just the ticket.
In business news… Shine wins the Hallensteins account. The one that used to do great ads before it’s last agency took over.
Andrew, get back to that fridge magnet you sad fuck.
Yikes – you don’t get bullet pointed criticism like that on a visual ad.
Nice work Macca.
Andrew you can go fuck yourself.
Andrew is obviously out of work. No one with gainful employment would either bother or care to write such shit. Get over it mate, it’s a fuckin ad, not a fuckin thesis.
Andrew here.
Thanks for the advice chaps. I’d love to post some of my work here, but it’s all shit Like really shit. I may be a bit “pernickety”, but I expect award winning ads to be the kind of thing you look at and go “Fuck, that’s cool”. This ad just made me shake my head.
Seriously, if you’re going to use terms like “avant garde” and then spell them wrong, what sort of model are you setting for the rest of us?
You can slag me off all you want, but the winner was, as I pointed out, poorly written, poorly researched and extremely poorly judged. And the judges are supposed to be the experts.
Please try harder, all you’re doing is lowering the bar.
Andrew, 5.12 here. OK, fair call.
2 CD’s, a writer, art director, 3 suits and a planner to produce this?
Andrew’s right, it’s shocking.
“get back to that fridge magnet you sad fuck.” It’s your ad right?
2 CDs, a writer, an art director, 3 suits and a planner.
But no subeditor.
Whoops.
This ad won best print of the month. that means no matter what any of you think of it, whether it’s ‘lowering the bar’ or whatever, none of you did any better.
when these guys did this ad, i’m sure they weren’t doing it with critical pieces of shit like Andrew in mind, who could only dream of having this in his book – they did it to make people ‘think’ as it so clearly says.
We all have.
tick.
worked.
That’s funny.
You’re so assertive, not to mention eloquent.
Why can’t Andrew have an opinion? That’s what this is all about isn’t it?
It ponders absolutely nothing.
The conventional has more appeal in every walk of life, not just film.
Which is why bad “flicks” (very creative) make more money.
Which is the reason Hollywood exists.
As far why are foreign films bla bla bla…they’re not. And what’s a foreign film anyway?
We all have. ticked. worked.
Brilliant. Ever thought of being a writer?
