WELLINGTON ZOO NAB’S AD OF THE MONTH
Wellington Zoo’s Adults Only Valentine’s Day ad, via Saatchi & Saatchi, Wellington, was the winner of NAB’s February Newspaper Ad of the Month. The ad was also a Top 6 of the Week pick in early February on www.bestadsontv.com
“What could be so disgusting to get a chimpanzee embarrassed?” said judges Regan Grafton of DDB, Justin Wood of .99 and Mark Lorigan of Team Saatchi.
Client: Wellington Zoo
Agency: Saatchi and Saatchi, Wellington
Writer: Tim Hall
Art Director: Scott Henderson
Retoucher: Geoff Francis
Account Service: Mel Bowker
The winning creative team will receive $250 cash and the ad will be entered into 2010 Axis Awards.
The ad will appear in the “What’s New” section of March AdMedia.
Special mention also went to The Warehouse Valentine’s Day promotion created by Aim Proximity. A simple and mysterious newspaper ad assisted in driving males online to create a personal Valentine’s message using some pretty cool technology. “Great idea but pity it didn’t have any tie back to the brand,” agreed the judges.

There are just three more opportunities remaining to win Ad of the Month and receive automatic entry
into The Newspaper Ad of Year and its $10,000 cash prize. Competition round ends May 31st.

Nice. I’m pretty sure the chimp was looking at some kind of donkey punch.
Regan agreed the Warehouse idea didn’t tie to the brand? Bold!
Yipee. Another Zoo ad.
With those judges we have to be thankful a bunnings ad didn’t top the list.
As a matter of interest, what was adults only at the zoo? Did people go to the zoo to root in front of animals? Did they play porn flicks at the zoo? The Wellington Zoo site has nothing on it. Anyone?
Well Sex sells, obviously. And Animals are cute and stuff so why not combine them for ultra-win?!
I am reminded of something from Ace Ventura… oh yeah, that’s it. It’s shit!
I didn’t think it needed the ‘Adults only’ bit.
Yep, a bit av from a business or strategy view, an O’pportunity brief again.
But the judges need to make those calls.
Thankyou for your interest in our ad 5.23pm.
FYI This ad, as well as the radio and viral also approved and paid for by the client, was in response to a brief from them about a one-off promotion for a Valentine’s evening at the zoo.
Alcohol was being served and zookeepers gave talks on the mating habits of several species, so it was important to highlight that, unlike any other day, it was only appropriate for over 18s to attend.
I believe you may not have found anything on the website because you were looking in early March for an event that occurred in mid-Feb. There was a promotion of the event on the site at the time this ad ran, but websites do periodically get updated.

Brilliant response, to both the brief and the opinionated pigshit on here.
Congrats.
Well put Tim. And congrats, it’s a nice ad.
Ha ha, speaking of mating habits, it looks like 5.23 just got F*#*ed
Tim Hall, lighten up.
pwned
Sensitive…
Hi 5.23 here.
Sorry if I caused you offence Tim. It was a genuine question as to what was the actual event. Adults only at the zoo is intriguing yet there was nothing, until your response, to say what it was. As you acknowledged, there was nothing on the site.
I understand that it’s easy to get defensive (especially on this blog) when you think a valid piece of work is being questioned, but I was simply asking what the event was.
Craig,
No offence taken. As you mention, anonymous comments questioning the validity of work is nothing new on this blog. Thanks for allowing me to set the record straight. And for putting your name to your post.

By the by, if you’re the same Craig I used to work with in Melbourne, use that mobile number I gave you.
