Worthington’s One Show Diary – last thoughts

ColensoBBDO executive creative director Nick Worthington has just returned from Hawaii where he has been judgingThe One Show, one of only a handful of non Americans on the prestigiousjury. These are Worthington’s last thoughts for the blog:

OK, so I’m back in NZ after the first round of judging,  I still have no idea of the finalist list, and you’ll know as soon as I do as they’ll publish the results on line in a week or so.

Fingers crossed for all of us. We then reconvene in NYC for three days of judging what goes in the book, what gets bronze, silver and gold.

It’ll get ugly and bitter then I guess but until then I’ll assume all the work I liked is in.

Which includes yours of course.

The overwhelming legacy of the judging so far is the importance of craft. It’s what takes average ideas and makes them seem brilliant and takes brilliant ideas and makes me feel sick.

Note: Must try harder.

The other thing was the return flight. The Aussie baggage handlers dida wild cat strike, which sounds cool, unless like me you’d got up at4am to catch a flight home.

So I ended up on jetstar.

I work with Air NZ so it felt wrong from the start.

11hours to do the same distance as I’d flown 3 days earlier in nine and ahalf, you have to buy a blanket, and a pillow, that’s if you want tosleep. But sleeping is the cheapest option, so buy the blanket. Stayingawake is really expensive, you have to buy a movie, and headphones, andtea, and food, and wine. I wasn’t prepared, but other people were, theybroke out sandwiches like veterans, in a refugee camp.

If this is the future, it might be orange, but it’s not very bright.

As for the ‘what awards should we enter debate’  I’d love to get everybody’s thoughts on this.

But I’m a bit tired.
