DDB team wins $10k Newspaper Ad of Year
DDB has won The Newspaper Ad of the Year 08/09 for Cadbury Hall’s Throaties Knife, the winning creative team collecting the $10,000 grand prize. The prize was announced at a function held in Auckland last night at Hopetoun Alpha. Agency and newspaper guests viewed the 15 finalists on display, as well as student work from AUT and Axis Adschool.
“The Newspaper Ad of the Year winner is strikingly simple and page stopping. It’s advertising at its best,” said Lexie Ribot, creative manager of the NAB.
The audience also participated in a pick the winner competition where one lucky guest walked away with $1000.
A demonstration of newspapers’ flexibility and timeliness was also given on the night with a winning announcement newspaper ad produced live and despatched from the venue to appear today in five metropolitan newspapers: The New Zealand Herald, The Dominion
Post, Waikato Times, The Press and Otago Daily Times.
Axis Adschool (at Media Design School) students Tim Twigden and KarinLundgren won the Topical Newspaper Prize. The ad had to be about alocal story in the Otago Daily Times, a particularly tricky brief, buta story about a lost tramper carrying only a can of baked beans gavethem an irresistible fart story – and because it was a front page storytheir ad (left) didn’t have to resort to the ‘cut out the article and tell ajoke’ formula. Congratulations also to Axis Adschool graduates who notonly took out the big Newspaper Ad of the Year prize but also six ofthe finalist places. Nice work.
The new competition round started 1st June 2009.

I am surprised this won. It doesn’t really demonstrate a unique or creative use of the print medium. In fact I only ever saw it in Adshels around Auckland.
If NAB wanted to promote the use of the print medium, they would have been better directing the judges to award the prize to an advert that could ONLY work in print. And more specifically press.
In my opinion the Warriors ad, the Air Force ad, or even the Top Gear ad did this better.
But oh well, congratulations James and Christie.
I love this ad. Nice work Christie.
I am surprised this won too.
Well done to the guys who did it.
But it just isn’t a stand-out winner.
It’s a good ad. But not a great one.
Well done Christie and James!
The judges comments differ hugely to Richard and Ed.
Richard and Ed, John Hegarty liked it. Suck it up. Hats off Christie and James. And nice work on Fruit Burst too. Bet Richard and Ed thought that was just like that Deadline Courier piece of scam too.
Is this as good as print gets in NZ? F*ck me!
Sorry guys, this isn’t fantastic, it ain’t genre defining. It won’t make people get into advertising, and it won’t make people in advertising try harder.
So, John Hegarty liked it? Well whoopee. That might have stirred emotions ten or fifteen year ago, but not now.
Sorry but please don’t start judging this as some abstract painting which only a few understands!! Not worth it.
Terry. Not saying I didn’t like it. It’s a nice ad. But that’s the point. It’s a nice ad. Not a fucking great, stonking award winner. It’s just a nice ad. Suck it up.
What does it say in the voice bubble?
It says “Richard’s a knob”
Karin & Tim did well too. Congrats.
