As the launch of the iPad sparked a global debate on how it might affect mainstream media ranging from newspapers to TV, Simon Canning in today’s Media section of The Australian reports that one Australian company predicts it could derail one section of the communications industry: direct mail.

The article talks about the iPad ending the need to send catalogues through the mail. Which is not quite the same thing as the end of DM.
Still, if it’s wireless, user-friendly and incredibly popular, then of course it’s going to be a big part of the ad business over the next few years
I would say as a new or additional channel that it will only grow direct business not “derail” it. Direct has always been about working with innovation, the only issue will be any opt-in functionallity, but that is nothing new to e-dm.
