Rugby, part of who we are

Ogilvy Auckland was tasked to promote New Zealand’s premium rugby competition – theRebel Sport Super 14. This idea is designed to raise the emotionalstakes by showing the Super 14 as part of the proud rugby history ofthis country and to reinvigorate spirit and pride in the competitionitself. To remind people that it is, all about the rugby.

Slight flaw: it’s not true.
It’s only been six or seven weeks since the last rugby season ended. I need a better reason to get invigorated about the new season.
Too much rugby means people will pick and choose the games they want to watch. When people start doing that, then you’re on a short road to ruin.
By the time summer ‘roughly’ ends (31st March), the Super 14 is half-way through its competition. After that, we have another nine months of rugby.
I need a better reason to look forward to the rugby season, pleading that it’s who we are, just reflects a consumer truth about existing hardcore fans, but it doesn’t create new fans.
I remain unconvinced.
I liked it when I saw it.
Can’t buy that. Super rugby relegated 100 years of NPC to the second division. Now it wants to borrow interest. Fuck me Foxy.
Read “The Judas Game” by Joseph Romanos. He makes some very good points on how Super 12/14 is killing the lifeblood of NZ rugby – club rugby.
