Hazel Phillips from NBR reports that TBWA has lost the ASB account after having it for more than 12 years and recent start-up Droga5 has emerged victorious.
Pictured left are D5 NZ founders Mike O’Sullivan, Dave Droga and Andrew ‘Rocky’ Stone.

I hope it’s not true.
I love those guys at TBWA.
They are the the real thing. The good guys. And they have consistently done a fantastic job.
There’s no justice in the world if ASB shifts.
Oh dear.
So Droga choose to chase a big, corporate, traditional spending bank as their founding client in NZ. Fits far more with the founders’ own brands than the Droga5 brand.
Does this mean that Andy Blood will loose a ‘group’ from this ‘Group Executive Creative Director of Group’ title? That would be a real shame.
Major coup for Rocky and Mike O (and the other guy). A week ago they had no billings. Now they have wrested a prestige brand from an agency that was frankly doing a good job on it.
2:18. Oh do grow up. Would you turn down 180K + of revenue a month? And a chance to say na-na-na-nana to the naysayers? Now lets see the work. I’m sure they will surprise us again.
Devo and Andy. Really sorry it came to this for you. What a bugger. Think you deserved a better go.
So there you go. Getting your planning director to become the client doesn’t work.
What clients does TBWA have left? I hear people are leaving there in droves.
knife.twist.
such a shame
Droves? There isn’t a ‘drove’ left to leave.
Too many chiefs.
Why change? TBWA was doing very well
I wonder which bank TBWA will pick up now, Maybe ANZ?
Leaving TBWA free to nab a bank with a little more respect for the nice work they do. Be interesting to see what Droga can pull out, but can’t imagine it will do either Goldstein or the Droga franchise justice.
Given ANZ and National ATL agencies have really just been appointed I doubt any movement will be on the cards.
I also suspect the days of banks (or many clients) giving agencies 180K per month revenues are long gone too across the board.
Welcome to reality.
Hmmm…. the dark blue bank could do with some decent work, proper thinking and people who know what they’re doing.
Well, the work couldn’t get much worse than it’s been for the last 18 months. A pure power brand has been dragged thru the hedge by a recession/a staff restructure/poor agency briefing. I hope they find their feet again – like a Steiny Pure rebirth perhaps. I think a good brief to Andy Blood would have avoided this – probably a lot to do with budgets too..
A good brief? They would have to know what they want or are doing for that to occur, poor leadership in action…
Good luck to Droga, hope there is a psychic on the new team
Im sure TBWA will pick up another large account soon
Which other large accounts have they picked up in the past 5 years?
I can’t think of any, they’re a small agency with no direction.
An agency’s ideas are only as good as the client signing off on the work. The only way Droga 5 can prosper is if they get someone else into that role.
You can’t blame the client for sticking with the american idiots for too long and please don’t tell me the public loved it because the public can love something made by the agencies.
8.41
That makes no sense at all on oh so many levels. I pray you are not a writer.
8:46 is dead right. They can’t win significant new business.
Auckland is small. Everyone knows and many people love Devo, but many a businessperson is wary of working with a controversy magnet with a passion for stirring things up. ASB is the exception.
Sorry, WAS the exception.
