Social Media NZ relaunches to make social media useful to audiences outside the ‘twitterati’
The communications industry and their clients will be out in force next Tuesday at a seminar and drinks, hosted by Simon Pound, for the relaunch of news and opinion site Social Media NZ.
Launched last week, the site targets social media and technology news, trends and commentary to a more mainstream audience with articles from top-level business people, academics and regular contributors.
(Of particular interest to ad creatives is former Saatchi’s creative Helen Steemson’s article titled, ‘The role of the ad creative in emerging media’. Steemson now heads up creative at new model communications agency, The Common Room).
Says Social Media NZ’s founder and creative director, John Lai:”Businesses know these new media are important but often don’t see howthey can get commercial value from them.
“We get fed lots of success stories, but not really any reasons whythey were successful or how other businesses can do the same. We wantto give people that understanding to make social media suddenly seemlike really effective, usable tools.”
The company has partnered with collaborative communications agency, The Common Room for the relaunch.
Their head of digital engagement, Hayden Raw: “Social Media NZ’s shiftwill help businesses use the platforms more effectively, by making theinformation more relevant.
“A lot of the twitterati are propounding to be experts; they’re greatat the social media tools but don’t have the expertise in other areas;they know how to use a hammer, but don’t know where to put the nail.Social Media NZ’s contributors are experts in their fields who alsohave insight into how social media can be useful to their industry, whether that’s branding, trades services or internal comms.”

So, I guess the role of the ad creative in the emerging media doesn’t include proof reading?
You don’t need proof reading in social media. You need engagement! and conversation and social currency.
What a load of new twat. And why do social media types continue to suck up to Air New Zealand, can’t they see they are being used?
Looks like an iPhone-fanboy blog to me. And it looks like “industry experience” means having _watched_ lots of tv commercials if the bios of any of their tween writers is anything to go by.
Hey, you’re not allowed to say anything bad about social media, 9.19. Thats the rules.
@9:19 It’s all part of the self congratulatory culture created by Air NZ. Am I the only one who’s growing a little tired of them and their social media oompa loompas?
Air NZ is a terrible client with no cohesive strategy.
went to the opening – waited an hour for things to kick off – had an 18year old crap public speaker trying to school people on socail media – would love to know where there baking is coming from however fair bit of $$$ floating round there – all in all very crap
It’s interesting to see everyone has got a valid point
but for people to stayed anonymous – its like protesting outside parliament for your rights but you have a bag on your head because you don’t your family to know who are.
i watched the live stream event, i have to say, what they have done is good. and i think he wasn’t trying to school people in social media, because if you listened carefully they are a hub and they have contributors from different background from comms, pr, media, ad agencies that embraces social media, so their not a consultancy service. they are like marketing nz and auckland chamber or commerce but for social media and technology
but this is my opinion and i think we need more new zalanders to step out of their comfort zone to do something for themselves, so they can contribute back to new zealand
