DDB lands iconic Lion Red account
Lion Nathan today officially appointed DDB New Zealand to handle all advertising work for iconic beer brand Lion Red. The win will see the current DDB beer suite expand, with Lion Red joining existing Lion Nathan brands Corona, Stella Artois and Budweiser on the client roster.
DDB New Zealand managing director Justin Mowday is excited to have another Lion brand join DDB: “This win is evidence of our ability to develop bold ideas that span digital, experiential, PR and advertising – lots of agencies are still talking ‘integration’ and ‘digital’, but we’re really interested in creating moments with consumers utilising whatever channel is appropriate to deliver a quality brand engagement.”
Says DDB executive creative director Toby Talbot: “Lion Red is one of the classic Kiwi brands. We look forward to making it the centre of all maledom again.”
DDB has been working with Lion Nathan since 2006.

First things first. Change the bottle label design back to the way it was. It looks like its stuck in limbo between old fashioned and try-hard cool.
here’s a punt: if ANZ, Sky & Lotto are anything to go by Red will follow DDB’s generic ‘Life sucks’ creative strategy & the campaign will go something like this: ‘It sucks being a Kiwi bloke today, (creaking reveal) but you’ve always got Lion red’. But, maybe they just did a retail deal with the Warehouse and a guy in a Kiwi suit will be chugging ’em back.
well, this is a cue for DDB – everyone thought J&J were shoe-in’s for Lion Red
Do you mean a coup?
J&J won the Waikato Draught part.
I don’t know if I’d call it a classic Kiwi brand. It’s only popular with a certain demographic in parts of the North Island. Not a popular drink in the south.
Lion Red is being euthanased by Lion.
How could anyone get ‘cue’ mixed up with ‘coup’?
ah, I dont think Lion will euthanased Lion Red. Its still there third or fourth biggest selling beer – you would be a fool to do that.
and the cue/coup mix-up just scares me when I think that these people are in advertising, and most likely copywriting
Same people who say “would of”
My 2 year old daughter threw up after drinking Lion Red. I then gave her a Tui – same result.
1:06 – bro, breweries do stupid things all the time.
1.06 0- it’s/its and there/their are kind of scary too/to

First up hats off to DDB. that’s a great win. The whole industry thought it was Josh and Jamie’s. Speaking of J&J, ‘Same old, same old’ earlier suggested that DDB’s ads are a bit samey. Personally I don’t agree. Lotto, Sky, ANZ are all different. I like most of their stuff. If you were going to point the finger at ‘same old, same old’ then what about the newly minted J&J? The good ‘ol kiwi theme worked with L&P, but now I’m sick of Heartland blokes and lists EVERY TIME. Their latest blockbuster for NZ Dairy with the dude on the quad bike. Isn’t that a chubbier version of the dude for NZ Lamb who goes walkabout but now he’s on wheels? They seem to do true blue kiwi ads and nothing else. Bit boring fullahs. Hope Kim and the guys at Assignment move them on a bit.
Lion are ‘managing the decline’
You’ve got to laugh.
In going to DDB, Lion has gone ‘home’.
Like attracts like.
8.14 – that’s the elephant in the industry room. However the things with elephants in rooms is that you generally don’t say them. At least not out loud.
Lynchy your captcha thing is extremely difficult to read and abnormally long sometimes – throwing up what look like phone numbers as well as illegible letters that bleed into each other. Try another one please
8:16 They are good guys, trying to do good work for their own clients.
Who are you to point the finger at them?
1:06 ‘will euthanased Lion Red’, ‘it’s still there third…’?
Certainly hope you’re not one of the Copywriters you’re taking the piss out of.
