Hankinson trades DDB New Zealand head of copy gig for creative director role at .99 Auckland
Paul Hankinson has quit his head of copy gig at DDB New Zealand for the creative director role at .99 Auckland. The appointment follows the resignation of .99’s deputy creative director Craig Pethybridge in November last year.
Australian born Hankinson was lured to DDB New Zealand in 2007 and has had previous stints prior on both sides of the Tasman, including Mojo, Auckland and HKM (now Clemenger BBDO) in Wellington.
Under Hankinson’s leadership as creative group head on McDonalds, the company was named Marketer of the Year at the NZ Marketing Awards and for the first time began exporting McDonald’s creative work for use in the Australian market. He was also instrumental in DDB’s ANZ win, then as ANZ creative director authored the Perfect World concept.
Volkswagen’s ‘Finance Director’ retail spot earned him a Bronze Lion at Cannes and his work for SKY TV includes the award-winning Aliens vs. Predator print campaign and last year’s Leafblower TVC for Sky TV. Prior to DDB, his body of work includes campaigns for Hallensteins, Woolworths, Coca-Cola, Burger Rings and Beaurepaires.
ECD and managing director Craig Whitehead said Pethybridge’s decision to leave the agency to pursue other opportunities was a blow given he was one of the original .99 staffers: “Craig has played a massive role at the agency since day one and we wish him all the best with the next stage of his career.
“However, his pending departure did force us to rethink the make-up of our creative team and we are delighted to have someone of Paul’s caliber join us. Paul has a strong background in both brand and retail and has a number of award-winning campaigns from both camps under his belt. He will bring great conceptual thinking and writing skills to the agency and we can’t wait for him to get stuck in.”
Says Hankinson: “I’ve always held the view that a retail ad still has to be something of a brand ad. It’s blindingly obvious that Craig and Neil share that view, and this is borne out by the fact that brands such as Air New Zealand and New World are now looking to them for their brand communications as well as their retail offering. Craig and Neil have made it clear that they are keen to up the ante with the quality of the work, and I’m both thrilled and humbled that they’ve entrusted that to me.”
Pethybridge will be leaving the agency early March and Hankinson will start late March.
Whitehead says that he and Hankinson are in the process of interviewing for another senior creative and an appointment is imminent.

on ya Hanko!
Great guy, but a really crap tee shirt!
Jeeze. Big loss for DDB. At least 99 will get someone who can actually write for TV.
all the best hanko, i’lll miss your elevator farts the most
Huge loss for DDB
His t-shirt is cool as! His pants are really gay though.
Thank God for that. We’ll see some decent ads from 99 at long last. Hopefully Rico will the first against the wall.
Miss you buby!
I quite like the Rico ads. They are different and very funny. Ok they are a little nutty, but at least they make you jump up and pay attention.
NZ advertising at present is very LOW. Other than the odd gold standard mailer in my letter box there is little out there.
“we wish him all the best with the next stage of his career”… really?? Once more and this time with feeling….Sorry but I would expected more if I was The Peth. Flowers, a balloon. Perhaps a heartfelt snog.
Is this damage control or suppressed manly emotion??
Why would he do it. Must be a paying gig.
This is a funny little blog.
Peth – you rule! A man amongst men. Can’t wait to see wait you do next.
Peth rocks.
.99 will be a lesser place without him.
I’m looking forward to working with you again mate.
