An antique print campaign from DRAFTFCB

The items which appear on Antiques Roadshow often have an intriguing story about their history. This DRAFTFCB, Auckland print campaign for Prime TV, shows how the antique’s story can be just as valuable as its price.

I like some of FCB’s recent work, but this one does not quite hit the mark with me.
I love the show, and yes, the stories are the most interesting part, so they’ve found a truth, which is great. But I don’t feel the truth has been brought to life. Somehow just telling me there is a story without telling me what it is leaves me feeling a bit let down.
I agree, a plate is boring (even with the carefully chosen or shopped image – I don’t care which). The story could make it very interesting. If anything, despite the headline, this ad makes me think Roadshow is boring and staid and all about plates and tables and stuff, rather than about living slivers of history that have survived to our age.
Watch the show. Choose some interesting stories and dramatise them in ads. That should be a copywriter’s dream brief.
The ‘worthless’ melted crockery from Hiroshima, the butt ugly owl that is worth 100s of 1,000s of quid, the C19 furniture that was in fact assembled / salvaged from older bits, some dating to the 13th century. I was fascinated by those stories. There is nothing fascinating about this ad.
These ads are far less interesting than the show.
Wow. You hate them 5.17.
