Come in Osama, Hell’s waiting for you
Within an hour and a half of President Obama’s announcement, Barnes, Catmur & Friends, Auckland had conceived, written, sold and dispatched this topical press ad for client Hell Pizza which ran in this morning’s edition of the New Zealand Herald.
Account Director Sally Willis spotted the potential for an ad and contacted an enthusiastic client. The space was snapped up by Media Planner Monica Wales at the same time as the ad was put together in the creative department.

Not sure it needs the first comma.
Sometimes everything just clicks. A great newspaper ad and leading the pack for May Newspaper Ad of the Month.
7.29.
The English language begs to differ.
Awesome ad.
Great, idea, ruined, by, the, wrong, use, of, commas,,,
I would have dropped the “come in’ altogether and just had “Osama”.
To forgo the first comma would be an act of necrophilia. Which is illegal.
Without the comma, come should be spelled with a u and no e. Although, depending on which orifice is being used the correct phrase could in fact be ‘squicking’.

4.20 For the win.
Catmur has to be kicking himself for that comma! This is a headline mate, not an action movie script.
Nah. The first comma is right. It’s the second one they could have done away with.
Line break does the job.
It’s a punters appreciation piece, surely that’s obvious. It’s also a good old fashioned topical press ad. Which is good for the brand and was probably fun to write. Take it for what it is and maybe do one yourself.
who cares about the comma, it’s a shit ad!
let’s just get this over once and for all. Every 6 months Hell can move to a new agency and we can all get these shitty death ads out of our system.
Obviously Colenso, Y & R, BCF and Cinderella (!) have already had their turns… who’s next?

One does not start a sentence with “Which”, one uses it in a relative clause.
I thought Hell were going to give their whole business to Ad School.
I have many faults, but grammar is not usually one of them. Both commas are correct.
The first one is not incorrect. It is unnecessary.
You eggz should shut up no 1 carez bout comaz but chu guys anywayz
Mr Catmur is right.
We use commas to add pause and drama to a piece of copy. It is a guide for the reader, and allows them to read the words as they were intended. Imagine for yourselves the Devil was welcoming you into Hell. “Come in, (pause) Osama”.
It works.
Now get back to fucking work, dicks.
Mr Catmur, shouldn’t you have said “I am many faults. Where grammer’d isn’t one of them. Both commas is correct.”
A COMMA IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE.
And I can’t believe there are copywriters here contesting it.
Come in Osama?
Sexual.

Rule 4
Discussion over.
My 2 cents – ‘Osama. We’ve been expecting you.’ Reads better with just the right amount of drama minus the hideous commas.
“Come on in Osama,
we’ve been expecting you”
Still ties in to the idea that Osama can visit the Hell stores and gets rid of the comma that leads the reader to believe the Devil is William Shatner. Possibly.
