Film Construction director Steve Saussey finds humour in the pain shared by all dads involved in teaching a teenage son how to drive in this new spot for NTZA via Clemenger BBDO, Wellington.
The message: don’t bail out too soon – they still need your help.

Funny. Clemenger has the Mitsubishi account, but choses to never use Mitsubishi cars in their ads for other clients? In fact on this occassion, BMW gets a MASSIVE plug from Clems.
But pretty much every other agency with a car brand onboard subtly uses their clients cars in other client’s campaigns.
What gives Clems? Are you pitching for the Beemer work?
Is that Ant Timpson?
9.33 NZTA can’t be seen to use any particular marque, so it’s more the generic shape of the car that’s noticeable (you’ll notice no badging etc). The agency can’t just use Mitsubishi in the ‘good’ ads and not the ‘crash’ ads or they’ll be accused of favoritism, so as there are more ‘crash’ ads for this NZTA it’s better to not have that associate with Mitsubishi. Just saying.
yeah well G – SOn is a knob who knows nothing about how the world works.
I really like this ad. At first I thought it was yet another gay arsed learner driver/bunny-hop etc cliched ad, but the ejector seat gag completely threw me.
Good stuff, and great casting for the dad. Thumbs.
They also now do Toyota and Lexus given AIM is under the same roof – nice Chinese Wall
Well put Just saying and a nice attempt at stirring from G-son.
Perhaps Mitsubishi doesn’t want their product used? And I’d hardly say that it’s a massive plug for BMW.
The car used is ugly and apparently not easy to drive with wheels that damage easily.
Hi G-son,
Thanks for your concern, but as the client we can assure you we have no problem with Clemenger using nondescript, unbranded cars in their ads – in fact it’s our preference. We would never expect Clemenger to be deliberately profiling one of their other clients in a Mitsubishi ad, so why would we then turn around and demand Clemenger use Mitsubishi cars everytime they shoot an ad with a car in it? This isn’t a brand consortium.
These ads are about changing driver behaviours, not about selling cars. Which is obvious in the complete absence of sweeping front 3/4 shots of the car, badge closeups and any driver satisfaction whatsoever. I’d actually say the whole driving experience looks a little hellish, and the father might want to consider upgrading to a vehicle with reversing sensors to stop his son scraping the hell out of the paint work.
Cheers, RC.
On an unrelated topic. I’d like to post this before it ends up as a NZ mobile phone ad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvXqXcVF5S8 – That is all.
I just read NBR and had to laugh at the “Kiwibank takes AIM” article.
They have always used them just under a different name to avoid the issue with the National Bank which of course no longer exists.
In reply to Anonymous – No the Dad is not Ant Timpson his name is Richard Whiteside http://www.theproactors.co.nz/
@9:01 based on how far behind the pac map rip was, expect to see this as a mobile ad somewhere in 2013.
