Steinlager: A long time between drinks
July 4 2011, 6:20 pm | | 33 Comments
As an unconditional supporter, Steinlager has been through the same highs and lows as the fans for the last 25 years. While New Zealanders had that one magic moment, it’s been a long time between drinks since we’ve tasted glory. This spot from DDB New Zealand tells the story of a man and his can, and the journey they’ve all been through to get to this moment. The return of the iconic white can will be part of DDB’s campaign for Steinlager.

Goosebumps!!!
Usually I hate the haters on the blog, but today I am going to be a hater.
The music is the first thing that leaves me feeling flat. Also, bad perms and mullets work in a humorous context, but they are hardly rousing when talking about the world cup. Is this going to get Joe Average excited about Seinlager? Surely not, and isn’t that the point?
Hmmm, was it worth ditching Mojo over? I am not so sure.
hmmmmm is crazy. I saw this on TV last night and thought it was bloody amazing. I have a can of white Steinlager on my shelf in the garage. Sadly it’s empty.
His lucky can hasn’t been so lucky though.
@11.07 – I guess you guys at mojo want your account back, hence your hate eh?
Love it. Goosbumps also.
Great idea to bring back the white can. The ad itself & tagline is poor. I feel that the strategy here is all wrong. Don’t bring up cringe and choker memories, or have a tagline that the aussies will rip us to bits for if we don’t win.
Nice wallpaper.
what is it wit the white can? everyone seems to love it, even though most cant stand the taste of classic.
I like the TVC. its nice to see a sponsor actually adddress the fact we havent won the big one in forever. the ad sums up how I feel everytime the world cup rolls around .. it takes a few years to get over the hurt, but four years later im ready again
i love you rory, miss your nips. great work.
Fantastic. Go the ABs!
I like it, it’s all about Steinlager being a NZ beer and being proud of it.
I get a feeling this will work it’s ass off.
Good job.
Best World Cup ad so far.
91, 95, 99, 03 and 07 – the five worst days of my life, and somehow I love this ad – powerfully shot by Adam as always, beautiful lighting and I love the aging – didnt realise it was the same guys all the way through. Am looking for the digital aspect of this campaign though?
Why does he take the can to games that are not the final?
Utter horrible, cheesy crap.
‘You ready, dad?’
‘I am now son.’
More like an ad for yellow pages than the build up to the most exciting tournament the sport has to offer.
interesting that as well as revealling the national team are a pack of losers, they also address the commonly held belief that the beer is not worth drinking either. the best part is that if this sucker ever gets to drink his beer – it’ll taste worse than the bitter sting of defeat. lesson – Neither beer nor false hope improves with age.
Hmmmmm, by this stage I’d be beginning to think that the “Lucky Can” wasn’t quite so lucky anymore….
And after 24 years, I wonder if it will taste any better, because as we all know it couldn’t taste any worse….
i like it. hope there’s more to it…
Guess the door is wide open for Adidas to represent the hopes of the fans.
Sorry Steinlager, but this ad proves that you really don’t matter anymore.
Really nice.
I thought this ad was lovely and fresh. It’s not trying to appeal to awards jury. Love the new billboards I saw on Ponsonby Rd today. Well done.
An ad for the people – finally DDB you have put awards to the side and just made an ad that the people will love, and remember for years to come.
wow – have DDB hired a gimp farm of ‘lovers’ to post unctious praise on this blog or what!?
Shot Rory. You’re punching above your weight.
I’d love to see security try and take down that fella when he tries to sneak the tinny into Eden Park.
Lame. Pitiful. Outdated. Lacking insight, relevance and oh, creativity.
Goosebumps? Really? Put a jumper on.
I’m a Kiwi, and a rugby fan, and I got bored half way through the ad.
Agree with 7:03.
I heard DDB won the business from Mojo because they had the idea to bring back the white can that was last around in 1987. Now that is a big idea. It’s not about judging the TV ad and the billboards by themselves. I also heard that Lion has pretty much sold out of the stuff too. So yes, I like the TV ad because there is a bigger idea at play here. And before anyone cries Colenso and DB Export, there was no relevance to that idea. No one cared if they brought back a cheap beer from the 50’s. Whereas most true blue kiwis will love the return of the white can on the eve of the Rugby World Cup. And hats off for getting round the litigious RWC lawyers too. Fair play to DDB.
I’m not from DDB, and I think this spot is rather good.
And I’m a rugby fan, and now a Steinlager drinker.
That is all.
missed opportnity
Absolutely awesome idea to bring back the can, full credit. And well done to win the pitch. But kinda average TVC, feels like it could’ve been more uplifting.
I bought a dozen white cans last night. Point made. Nice & smart idea to bring back the white can for the RWC. Oh, and a NZ beer. We should all drink to that.
Christ I hope that guy looses that can before the World Cup.
