Boundary Road Brewery gets around NZ’s IP decision in new campaign via Barnes Catmur
This billboard, created by Barnes Catmur & Friends, Auckland, was created to highlight the disputed New Zealand Intellectual Property Office trademark decision that protects DB Breweries, Monteiths Radler brand beer.
Internationally, radler (cyclist in German) dates back to the 1920s and describes a shandy-style light beer, of Bavarian origin. Radler has always been a generic name. Trademarking the word is similar to trademarking terms like Lager, Pilsner or Ale.
When Boundary Road Brewery were refused permission to describe their beer as being a “radler”, because of DB Breweries’ trademark, they used this billboard to appeal to the court of public opinion. A lawyer’s letter has been received.

Love this. Taking the piss in order to sell some.
OK it’s way past time to call bullshit on Boundary Road.
The only crafty thing about them is disguising the fact that they are the same company as makes Ranfurly and New Zealand Lager. They are not small, and they are not sticking it to ‘the man’; They are ‘the man’.
This cynical appropriation of ‘craft beer’ by the big breweries does nothing to advance good beer, or New Zealand enterprise.
Booooooooo
bah? does BC+F whack every ad it makes up here?
Yeah. Ranfurly and NZ Lager – those titans of the NZ brewing industry.
Hey Anonymoose, The answer is YES. BC+F have delusions of grandeur and imagines that constant PR will get them a multinational buyout. Pass me a Tui.
BC + F is the shit. They do better work the majority of the big places out there. Leave them alone.
Psycho Joe and Anonymoose are both bitchy little Saatchis employees. You guys could post your real names and still nobody would know you.
