KONY 2012 is a film and campaign by Invisible Children – that has gone viral globally over the last few days – that aims to make notorious Ugandan guerilla group leader Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice.

But this is a scam. Remove it. And shame on everyone on Facebook who thought that they were great human beings for ‘Liking’ it etc.

I think it’s about time we get a dose of reality on what social media can actually achieve. It’s a potent tool for communication and Twitter and Facebook were effective tools for spreading pertinent information between protestors during the Arab spring but they never actually addressed the underlying issues that led to those uprisings. Likewise, writing a status update from a computer in somewhere in the west probably won’t de-stabalise an African warlord any time soon.
If I hear one more social media proponent wank on about how social media is saving the world I am going to kidnap them and sell them to a cocoa farmer in Ghana.
p.s. People who actually read things other than Facebook may have discovered that Obama sent 100 military advisers to help the Ugandan army fight this guy a few months ago. And he will never receive an effie….

I love it when a plan comes together.
-seeing how little money goes toward a ’cause’ is nothing new with non-profit organisations. World Vision have been robbing the poor for a lot longer than this Kony chap has.
