Colenso BBDO nabs BNZ; Westpac goes to pitch

Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) has appointed Colenso BBDO as its new advertising agency – while Westpac – which has been a Colenso BBDO client since August 2010 – has put its account out to pitch.
Says BNZ Chief Marketing Officer Craig Herbison: “Colenso BBDO has the creative track record and brand acumen we were after to move the BNZ brand forward.”
This appointment also has a regional logic:. BNZ’s parent bank National Australia Bank (NAB) has been working successfully with Clemenger BBDO in Melbourne for the last six years.
The relationship has been a strong and fruitful one having most recently launched the Cannes Grand Prix winning ‘Break-Up’ campaign to game changing effect in the Australian banking market.
Says Andrew Hagger, National Australia Bank Group Executive, People, Marketing and Communications: “There are clear synergies for us with Clemenger BBDO and the regional alignment across the NAB Group will give us increased scale and efficiencies.”
Westpac says it has achieved good momentum in recent months but now wants to consolidate its providers after a review over recent weeks.
“The time is right to consolidate the number of providers to meet our needs and objectives. We are thankful for the work and commitment of those who have partnered with us,” General Manager Marketing and Customer Experience, Martine Jager said.
“We are looking for an efficient process and selected agencies will be invited to pitch shortly.”
Westpac is to invite agencies to pitch for its creative account which is currently handled by five agencies.

Are the good folks at 99 being deliberately taken out ?
It’s a massive account, with only a few agencies actually able to pitch for it. Surely Westpac already knows who they want to work with, so PLEASE save us all the drama and just sign the contract.
RAPP to relinquish ANZ, Westpac appoints DDB Group? ASB’s options getting narrower by the day. Saatchi? Will Special offload TSB to make a play? M&C must want a bank too.
With both Westpac & ASB moving… who can handle the accounts?
Will they both be racing to get into Saatchis? Would YnR get a look in? Could MOJO handle it? Who else?
M&C might want a bank, but what you want and what you get can sometimes be two different things.
Draft FCB might want a bank – but can they handle it with their current new additions?
Don’t Draft have National Bank? Y&R is a good call. Great gag about about Mojo being able to handle it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whats this about ASB? is there any truth behind this?
Aren’t Assignment an option?
Not sure if Assignment would want the day-to-day hassle of running a bank.
If ASB is on the move, perhaps TBWA could set up a breakaway behind some sort of Chinese wall.
Y&R seems like an easy fit?
Surely BNZ has just gone “home” to Colenso, after six years away. They held it for over 20 years.
A shity bank client for what had become a shitty agency! Go figure.
But, finally the new marketing director will be able to prove that he wasn’t a one-hit wonder. Again.
What hit was that exactly?
CMO Vodafone, Colenso – now CMO BNZ Colenso – no surprise – let’s hope the person who has had about 6 jobs in five years lasts 12 months on this one – or as above said – just another over hyped one hit wonder only 12 months at Tel and less than 12 months in OZ – plus just a few more at Voda wtf! Toxic! I would say another 12 – 15 months at best on this one.
ASB will be moving very soon I reckon – process already under way from what I hear – no secret BC was not a fan of the campaign esp. IVF nightmare in which she took the unusual step of publicly slamming it.
