Fairfax Media to no longer send a young creative team to Cannes; opts to send three teams of young creatives to Spikes Asia in September
Fairfax Media will no longer send a young kiwi creative team to Cannes each year, instead opting to send three teams of young creatives to Spikes Asia in September.
Fairfax Media has had a long association with Cannes Lions as the country representative helping promote the Cannes Lions brand in the New Zealand advertising industry. Sandra King, Group Sales & Marketing Manager, has said today that Fairfax Media remains committed to this. However following consultation with local industry principals, Fairfax Media, whilst continuing to support Cannes Lions this year, will also move to support Spikes Asia – which is half owned by Cannes Lions.
New Zealand agencies are increasingly being asked to participate in regional campaigns; therefore Spikes Asia has growing relevance to the local market.
“Having attended the Cannes Lions Festival I know just how inspiring it is and how prestigious it is to receive a Lion. Our industry is constantly punching above its weight and has forged a name for itself at Cannes, and I am confident that our creatives will increasingly do the same at Spikes Asia,” says King.
“This year we are very excited to announce we are sending three teams of young creatives to Spikes Asia in September and are sure we will have New Zealand’s brightest and best upcoming talents making their marks on the Asia Pacific region.”
Fairfax Media remains the Cannes Lion partner for New Zealand for 2012 and values the role it plays in promoting the creativity of the New Zealand industry. This will now include Spikes Asia.

So, if Cannes half owns Spikes does this make my three spikes equal to a lion and a half?
Well that blows.
And, now that i think about it, if you’re sending three why bother with the age segregation?
Given the prize has become substantially less impressive, I would expect the quality of entries to follow suit.
However, it doesn’t really matter. Everyone knows the prize will simply go to the juniors working in the agency of the judge – just like it had for the last three years.
Yeap.
Stink buzz.
