DraftFCB Auckland’s Kelly Lovelock and Hywel James win February ORCA for sexy call girl stunt
DraftFCB Auckland’s Kelly Lovelock (right) and Hywel James (left) has won February’s ORCA for their sexy stunt promoting the premiere of Prime TV’s Secret Diary of a Call Girl.
Lovelock and James picked a bedroom window overlooked by the More FM Drive Show and gave them something to really talk about… one gent, one ‘call-girl’ and three afternoons of ‘performances’.
More FM’s Network PD, Ande Macpherson worked closely with Draft to set-up the Drive Show presenters, ensuring they were completely taken in. And they were, sharing the activities of their naughty neighbour on-air and online with the footage quickly going viral here and abroad.
On the last day, with public interest at its peak, the ‘call girl’ took to her window and revealed all… with a sign reading ‘Secret diary of a call girl – 9:35 Tonight on Prime’.
Judges’ comments included: “Brilliant”, “Loved this! Finally the pranksters get pranked!” and “Excellent use of the medium.”
The DraftFCB team now compete at the Grande ORCAs for the trips to the Cannes Lions and cash prizes. They also get to host the ORCA trophy and get $500, certificates and a $5,000 radio schedule for Prime TV.
Entries close on the 15th of each month.

@Category – I think the point is that it takes the basic idea of a radio ad and subverts it into something bigger, better and smarter.
@hmmm – I always thought a scam was something that got printed in an office newsletter or screened once at midnight on community access TV. Widespread coverage for an actual client and an actual product doesn’t really smell of scam. There is a reek of creative jealously about your comment though hmmm.
And no I don’t work (or sleep) with any of the creatives.

@Category – Well it used the medium of radio, it advertised a product (effectively) – I guess it depends on whether we still want to be stuck in the 30″ jingle definition of advertising forever? Seems it was good enough for The Radio Bureau anyway. A message to try harder and think a little more laterally perhaps?

This looks a bit more like a stunt than a radio ad. If someone talks about a tv spot on radio does that make it a radio ad too? Best radio ‘ads’ use the medium in an innovative way, but still use it as paid for medium. This is just some radio guys talking about a stunt. Nice stunt though, been done before in Brazil though.

This stunt doesn’t have a key number nor a booking number, so how can it be a radio ad.
If my stunt or TV ad or Facebook app gets talked about on radio, can I then enter it in Radio category?

Booking and key numbers are probably required to check if the ad actually ran.
In this case it clearly did.
Hopefully you can get someone to talk about your next stunt or Facebook app. However, you’re clearly missing the big picture – that being it’s a great was to harness the radio medium to spread a message and get some interest in the show. Job done mo fo. Stop your petty whinging and get back to crafting your 30 second spot.
Its a PR/Experiential Stunt that got alot of PR pick-up, namely in the radio space but also the social space.

Not fitting easily into an easily defined category should be a good thing in advertising. Well done guys.
It’s a great ad, and it may not have a key number, but the stunt was pulled specifically to create radio content, and it succeeded, so its a radio ad. well done!

Since when did playing a prank on a radio station constitute a radio ad?? Only in NZ. Things are getting a bit scammy over at FCB these days. Next they’ll be trying to teach a pig to fly. Air NZ and pak n save.
