St Matthew-in-the-City unveiles latest in series of confronting billboards via Einstein’s Hairdresser
St Matthew-in-the-City has unveiled its latest controversial billboard on its Hobson Street site, created by Auckland agency Einstein’s Hairdresser.
“Pope Benedict’s decision to resign caused an international stir,” says St Matthew vicar Glynn Cardy. “While we, from our outsider’s perspective, may think his decision was a wise and even courageous one considering the history and tradition of his context, it got us thinking about things from which we can’t resign.
“On Good Friday we remember Jesus’ crucifixion. It was not a role that he could resign from. Jesus’ faithfulness to loving and including society’s rejects got him killed. Such faithfulness is not something one resigns from, for it’s not a job.
“The cross reminds us of the cost of confronting the political power holders regarding how they exclude the marginal and vulnerable. Jesus was faithful to a vision. Even when it cost him his life.

Very, very cheap.
It beggars belief that an ad campaign for a religion can be so sanctimonious. And on that score, the sanctimonious prat, the Vicar Cardy has scored several own goals with that billboard.
Having a crack at the Pope’s resignation is hilarious considering the Anglican Church was splintered away from the Catholics by the head-chopping, bigamist Henry the VIII.
Cardy might want to look in the mirror before getting on anymore high horses.
Resign… he did resign to the will of his father. His l;ast mortal words say as much.
As for standing for the marginalised yes indeed he did but he was not discrimatory in the least.
He stood for all and evenly thre power of the following he had and their faith is what challenged authority.
Great poster but topical hardly but a ggod try at creating a talking point at Easter myself Ive seen better from St Matts
SCORES:
Degree of difficulty: Zero (Churches/religions are desperately easy targets for creatives’ desperate to be noticed
Creative Idea: Zero. (Seen it all before, and before and before.)
Strategic insight: Zero. (Zero comprehension & knowledge of the subject matter. A seriously shallow idea.)
To add to the vacuousness of it all, there’s a patronising, equally ‘look at me’ vicar.
At least the agency and client seem to be well matched.
I’m real too
This is the only good thing the Anglican Church has ever done.
If this is the only good thing the Anglican Church has ever done, they’ll never get past the pearly gates.
It’s shite.
Is an agency and agency if this is all it does?
PS. Looks like an iStock caption competition.

My question is not ‘who is Einstein’s Hairdresser?’
But ‘why is Einstein’s Hairdresser?’
