How TV2 and Contagion created an interactive lie detector test to promote Revenge drama series
CASE STUDY –
TV2’s latest show was Revenge. A glamorous drama about the most dishonest woman in the Hamptons. Emily Thorne is beautiful, smart and deceptive, but could New Zealanders be as cunning?
Contagion New Zealand created an interactive lie detector to find out. Passersby were interrogated, answers were analysed by their voice, perspiration and heart rate. Results were printed instantly, with the option to share them via social media networks.
According to TV2, over 12,000 unique interactions were recorded, each resulting in a printed call to action to follow the show. Ratings for the first episode exceeded all expectations, honest.

saw it. wasn’t working.
Unless the campaign managed to reach some of the 400-odd people scattered across NZ that have peoplemeters and are in TV2’s target demo then it will have had no impact on the ratings.
Or was the ratings expectation deliberately low?
I can easily see how they got to this execution.
New TV show about revenge > revenge could mean some deception was involved > deception involves lies sometimes > there are some signs of lying > lie detectors can find these signs > Fake lie detector in mall for 14 kids and one man to play with > People post status to bebo®.
With the fact that this made such an impact on viewership, and that you could post your results online to bebo®, I’m predicting titanium at Carins this year….. Except, it will be ripped from their hands in the following weeks by a scandal about TV2, who without any parental permission, put videos of 13 year old girls wagging school onto the internet for all eternity.
