Y&R Auckland created this billboard for Metservice to demonstrate its ability to provide Aucklanders real-time weather reports.

How is anyone meant to read the copy on that? Answer: they’re not. This is an ad that feels like it was conceived by an ad school student.

1. Metservice.com is not listed as a Y&R client
2. The billboard is directly outside the agency.
3. No logo.
4. The copy is too small to read from a moving car.
5. The billboard actually demonstrates a flaw with the service, in that you can just look outside for a weather report on what’s happening right now. The true benefit of the service is future forecasting.
1. Agency creates piece of sharable content for small client
2. Content gets shared online thousands of times
3. Small minded people from competing agencies condemn it on blog
If you’re going to do a scam try to do one that hasn’t been done.
2006 called.
1. Agency creates piece of sharable content for small client – AKA scam (everyone does them, just saying)
2. Content gets shared online thousands of times – news to me.
3. Small minded people from competing agencies condemn it on blog – Or rather, people who work in a creative community where intellectual property and ideas are an incredibly valuable commodity quite rightly point out that this is someone else’s idea.
Must be awards season…..
I’m not sure whether I liked it more as Auckland Regional Council or the Melbourne Movie Festival. But it is special make so it will definitely get up at Axis.
Was great for the weather channel.
I am curious about the icons, for several reasons.
First, how are they attached? And does someone rush out and change them when the weather changes, and at night?
But moreover, why are they there at all? You can see the weather for yourself through the billboard – which seems rather the point of it being see-through in the first place. Are they there solely as an attempt to put distance between this concept and the well-known Weather Channel work? I’m struggling to see any other reason for them.
It’s a video…
Just a tad awkward that the icon is a rain cloud for the ‘real time’ weather update.
You can’t seriously tell me you never saw the Weather Channel billboards?????
Looks like regular people were about as impressed as ad people.

Just waiting for someone to jump in and say “it has inspired discussion so it must be doing its job of raising awareness blah blah.” Anyone?
……Anyone?
…..
Why would anybody ever want a realtime weather report?
