NZTA tackles drug driving in latest ‘Shopkeepers’ 90 second spot via Clemenger BBDO, Wellington

New Zealand Transport Agency has just launched its newest spot to tackle the problem of drug driving via Clemenger BBDO Wellington.
It’s aimed at guys who often enjoy a bit of a toke, but don’t think it affects the way they drive. Many of them think because they drive slower, they’re safer. What they don’t realise is it makes them slower to react.
This commercial, filmed by Robin Walters from Curious Film, shows what the real experts on stoned behaviour think.

Go Te Atatu Peninsula!
A very nice, light-handed attempt to address a serious problem. Good performances and direction, and even the possibility of getting through to some of the target market. Well done.
which feels more faked – the cctv or the ‘unscripted’ comments?
misses the mark. again.
I love it. The writing, acting, direction, editing are all top notch.
Nice work Clems.
Great idea nice script.
Tired real people comedy / cultural archetypes. Not good enough. Taxi series was great.
jingoistic horse shit
Good ad, funny, but I’m sick to death of our government spending so much on ads that will not work. This will almost certainly make people joke about driving wasted, not stop them.
Nice ad 🙂 made me smile – but it’s the talent that really brought this to life.
Sorry about my boy.. pointing out the bleedin obvious and all. He smokes a lot of dope.
i was watching this on my iphone and laughed so much i dropped a flaming number on my groin burnt a hole in my jeans and smashed into a kids playground.
anyone got some more dope?
Sorry about my girlfriend.. pointing out the bleedin obvious about pointing out the bleedin obvious and all. She stole my dope stash
So what’s the point? If you’re slow to order you’re at a chinese takeaways you’re going to be slow to react behind the wheel? That’s not even tenuous, it’s absurd.
The stoned guy going into a chinese takeaways is probably the quickest to order. He knows exactly what he wants. He gets the same every time. The stoners I know are creatures of habit.
What’s ordering a bunch of buns with pink icing got to do with driving reactions?
This is a muddled piece of communication that will achieve nothing. Someone was definitely stoned when they conceived this idea.
I couldn’t disagree more, jesus.
I’ve been that guy standing at the takeaway/bar/cinema/dairy counter whilst completely monged plenty of times in my life. I’ve taken waaaaay to long to order. I’ve ordered really stupid things, due to my impaired judgement.
I’ve also jumped in my car thinking “it’s okay, I haven’t been drinking, just had a bit of a smoke”.
I laughed to see myself in this ad, and realised my own stupidity in thinking I was safe to drive. I’m not planning on doing it again.
Job done for this audience member.
If you have never got half way through an order at a dairy, paused for a moment, and in that moment forgotten what you just said and had to start again, then you have never been stoned in the first place, and consequently don’t know what the fuck you are talking about.
Great ad – only ad I’ve liked in a long time – well constructed & funny. Yo tho, I saw female drivers in the ad – wats with “guy” drivers in ur blurb – a universal term now?
Frank
my bloody goodness, thank god that these ads arent aired in the same manner as say the bambillo pillow,i think i’d want to smoke the biggest joint possible in hope i could stop torturing myself wondering who the hell is responsible/or ok’d this travisty of a “so called drug driving campaign”how much money was wasted on this crap, honestly. . the message that jumps out firstly after veiwing these ads is what state of mind was the person who came up with this poop,id be more concerned about getting in a car with them behind the wheel!!!!looks like no frosty pigs at my 3yr olds bday party as there will b quite a few kids attendin and that would make me look like a stoner for sure!
