The purpose of the redesign is to give readers access to more relevant content experiences that create higher engagement, delivered in a new layout. One of the key features of the redesign is a New Zealand media first – a new ‘content timeline’, or Story Arc. This links curated articles and images of the past, present, and even planned for the future for premium coverage of major events, with enhanced navigation and design, and offers a brand new way to consume stories. This allows the reader to follow a story as it unfolds, or get the full picture on anything they may have missed.

To celebrate the Herald’s 150th on November 13; a unique, responsive design web page showcasing the ten greatest New Zealanders of the last 150 years will be launched. This special feature environment will be continually used for significant events and stories. These changes set the tone for continued development across Herald products over the next few months.

Spencer Bailey, APN NZ Media’s general manager of digital says the reader is at the very heart of these changes.

Says Bailey: “The new article page has been redesigned to give our readers more of what they want. With a focus on reader engagement these changes offer a richer experience – more video, infographics, maps, social interaction and related content will be delivered to ensure our readers find everything they need about the stories that are important to them.”

The redesign has also enhanced a number of the Herald’s existing advertising units. The Super Rectangle ad unit will now feature on section pages only, providing more flexibility for editors to shape the look and feel of articles. Two smaller contextually driven units, ‘Special’ and ‘Relevant Offers’, will be integrated within a refreshed article side bar.
