Sweetshop director Edward Berger’s feature ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’ takes on 2023 BAFTAs
All eyes will be on Sweetshop Director Edward Berger this weekend as his devastating Netflix drama, All Quiet on the Western Front is nominated for 14 awards at this year’s British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTAS) held in the UK this weekend.
The film, which tells the story of an idealistic German soldier sent to the trenches, has been shortlisted for awards, including best film, director, supporting actor and adapted screenplay. Alongside this, the film has also been nominated for nine awards in the upcoming Oscars including top categories best picture and best international feature, as well as best cinematography, production design, visual effects, sound, makeup and hairstyling, original score and adapted screenplay.
With Sweetshop for commercial projects since 2018, Berger’s projects move seamlessly between film, TV and commercial direction, lending his skillful hand and incredible array of technical and directorial skills to commercial work in between films.
Says Paul Prince, executive chairman/founding partner, Sweetshop: “Edward Berger is a true Auteur, his latest work ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, is his masterclass. The recognition from BAFTAS proves it. Watch this space.”
Says Ben Dailey and Kate Roydhouse, executive producers of Sweetshop New Zealand: “Edward Berger is not only an absolute gent, he is also a remarkable film maker. We are awed by what he’s achieved with All Quiet on the Western Front and it’s evident, so is the wider world.”
With industry buzz strong and the Guardian naming the film the front runner for the upcoming awards, Berger recently spoke with Variety on the film’s awards success: “The novel’s powerful anti-war message unites us, no matter which country we live in. We are indebted to our incredible creative team — each person was an integral part of the whole and turned the film into what it is now. Thank you so much, BAFTA. We are deeply humbled.”
The 2023 BAFTA awards take place on Feb 19th in London with the 2023 Academy Awards (Oscars) taking place in Los Angeles on March 13th.
